While the A-Block already lost one of their top names, the B-Block of the 2021 G1 Climax is already proving to be a very close race. We’re still at the start, but truly every match matters right now – fall behind early and you’ll be eating dust. Tonight would see a big main event match in Kazuchika Okada vs. EVIL, as well as SANADA vs. Taichi.
Who Can Stop Jeff Cobb?
Kicking off tournament action tonight was a long standing rivalry. Hiroshi Tanahashi & Hirooki Goto have met many times along their careers – and historically Tanahashi has almost always come out on top. Tonight wouldn’t be an easy fight for either man, and after losing their first matches of the tournament – they were determined to not lose. They’d show their always incredible chemistry, but it was a slick counter into an inside cradle off a GTR attempt that caught Goto for the three count.
Up next was a Bullet Club derby, featuring Tama Tonga & Chase Owens, as they once again looked to prove they belong in the field. They’d show how good they are with technical wrestling, and while they stuck to wrestling a fundamentally strong match – it was really good. Owens would even use an STF, the move associated with Masahiro Chono – Mr. G1 himself. However a Gun Stun countered out of Package Piledriver saw Tama Tonga get the win.
Jeff Cobb is one of the men that is expected to make it to the finals in this tournament. He’s been an absolute monster in 2021, and tonight YOSHI-HASHI had to truly give his all to even get a near fall on Cobb. He pulled out some slick and unexpected moves like a Canadian Destroyer, and a flash pinfall, but fell to Tour Of The Islands.
Kazuchika Okada Is Back In Top Form
When it comes to SANADA & Taichi, they both come from the roots of AJPW – not NJPW. This can lead to them going for the King’s Road style – where you’ll often absorb five heavy blows to nail one of your own. They’d show some downright excellent technical wrestling, with SANADA managing to hurt the back of Taichi along the way. SANADA would emulate Mitsuharu Misawa with a Tiger Driver, and Taichi his trainer Toshiaki Kawada with a Dangerous Backdrop. However it was the missede Moonsault of SANADA and the Black Mephisto of Taichi that got him the win.
The main event would see EVIL try to stop The Rainmaker before he gets on a roll in this tournament. Okada was able to defeat EVIL earlier this year, with even Dick Togo not being enough to get EVIL over the ace. EVIL showed some solid brawling, and was able to stop some of Okada’s classic combos, but after Togo was taken out with a shotgun dropkick – a Landslide Tombstone into the Rainmaker kept EVIL from stealing a win.
Who’s Lead Is It Anyways?
After tonight, the points in B-Block look like this:
Kazuchika Okada, Jeff Cobb, Taichi – 4
EVIL, SANADA, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Tama Tonga – 2
YOSHI-HASHI, Chase Owens, Hirooki Goto – 0
