Upstart fight streaming promotion Triller are breaking boundaries yet again. This time, they’ve recruited heavy metal veterans Metallica to serenade the masses at their upcoming Triad Combat event.
Triad combat supposedly incorporates rules from both MMA and boxing, with athletes from both disciplines competing in a triangular ring. The first event took place earlier this year, which you may remember as the night Jake Paul fought Ben Askren.
Metallica Will Play Triller’s Boxing-Meets-MMA “Triad Combat” Event
A statement on Metallica’s website described the event as a “first” for a band who, at this stage of their stratospheric career, surely have few firsts left.
“Here’s something different for you and is definitely a first for us! We’ll be hitting the stage before the main bout at the Triller Fight Club debut of Triad Combat on Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Globe Life Stadium in Arlington, Texas. We hope you can join us in person that night, but if you can’t be there, enjoy the event from the comfort of your own sofa as the show and the fights will also be live on pay-per-view.”
The same statement clarified the nature of Triad Combat. “For those not familiar with Triad Combat, it’s a new team sport incorporating boxing and MMA rules in an aggressive, fast-paced manner.
Professional boxers compete against professional mixed martial arts fighters in a specially designed, triangular ring over two-minute rounds. It’s sure to be a wild, exciting, and unique evening no matter where you watch!”
Metallica, in case you haven’t listened to rock radio since 1990, are one of the biggest metal bands in the world, if not the biggest. Their smash crossover hit “Enter Sandman” brought the thrash pioneers into the mainstream, and remains a staple of sports events and rock radio to this day.
The band have recently been heavily promoting the thirtieth anniversary of their eponymous fifth record, known colloquially as The Black Album, and are slated to return to the studio in the near future.
MMA fans reading this will probably be wondering what the point of a sport that incorporated both boxing and MMA rules is. The main difference between Triad and standard boxing is that Triad Combat allows fighters to exchange blows in the clinch, while in a pro boxing match the referee will separate fighters in the clinch. Grappling and kicks will not be allowed.
Triller Fight Club co-founder Ryan Kavanaugh explained in more detail. “UFC is an old sport now.
The kids aren’t watching it. The UFC isn’t giving the 18 to 27 year olds what they want to see. So we’re hopefully bringing something forward that they do want to see.
It’s more exciting, it’s faster-paced and better looking. It’s shot like a movie or a video game, and it’s surrounded by culture.”
Why he plans on “appealing to the kids” with a band whose first record came out in the 80s is unclear. Will you be tuning in? Let us know in the comments.
