Tay Conti has done a lot in AEW, but tonight is her biggest night in the company. Never before has she had a singles match on PPV – let alone for a major title.. Tonight she will do everything in her power to take the belt away from Britt Baker. A win in a trios match on Dynamite set the groundwork, and tonight she tries to follow through and win the biggest prize in the AEW Women’s division.

Keeping Things Simple Makes For A Rock Solid Match

Conti came dressed for battle here, but got rolled up in the opening moments for a one count. Baker sent off another roll up, getting the same results. Conti would block a lockjaw attempt, and Baker blocked the DDTay attempt. They’d lock up, before Baker was taken down with some judo style throws.

Conti would look to apply an armbar over the ropes, but Baker was able to save it and hit a Butterfly Suplex. Baker got the cravate and nailed some big kneestikes, before clubbing Conti down to hit the swinging neckbreaker. Conti would weather the storm and nail some pump kicks in the corner before leaping up top and getting a crossbody.

A German suplex would get a two count, before Conti would slowly go up the ropes. Baker caught her with a kick and neckbreaker for a two count. The stomp was dodged the first time, and was nailed the second time. Baker got the glove for lockjaw and walked into a cutter. They’d head to the apron where Baker nailed the Air Raid Crash. Lockjaw was attempted once again, but instead Conti got the TayKo for a near fall.

Conti would pull out a Gotch Style Piledriver, but even that didn’t get the three count. Baker would get a roll up, and Rebel would distract the referee for Hayter to bring a beatdown. Conti was then stomped into the steel steps, and finally Lockjaw was applied for the finish… until Conti rolled to the ropes!

Baker went outside, and Conti hit a moonsault onto Rebel & Hayter, before a big slam found Baker. DDTay in the ring would get two, and her best shots are gone. Now, she’d try to kick Baker out, but end up in Lockjaw which Baker moved into a pinfall.

Neither Conti or Baker are known as in-ring workhorses of AEW, but they shined in this smartly crafted match. They played to their strengths, and kept things short enough to not get overexposed. The crowd started dead, but they worked hard to get them back with a simple pro wrestling match. Match Rating: 3/5 (***)

Ever since having an issue between CM Punk & Eddie Kingston sparked up in IWA Mid-South, it’s been brewing ever since. When they finally crossed paths in AEW, it was only a matter of time before something happened. So when Kingston was choked out by Danielson, pissed off, and crossed CM Punk? The fuse was lit. Now, after a war of words and a brawl or two, there is nothing to keep them from tearing each other apart.

Pure Hatred On Display From CM Punk & Eddie Kingston

Both men would march to the ring and were keen to get into it. Just ring the bell and let them go! Kingston nailed an Uraken before the bell even rang, getting the crowd behind him early. Punk fired a one finger salute and the bell rang, as they went outside for a brawl. Kingston won out until they got back into the ring, where Punk nailed some big knee strikes. Punk would take an exploder suplex, and would come back with kicks before a poke to the eye.

On the apron, Punk & Kingston traded blows, with Punk nailing a kick to gain control. He’d slam the hand of Kingston off the steps, and Kingston sent his face off the steps to bust Punk open. With his face looking like he left a UFC fight, Punk would dive off the apron with a lariat to Kingston. They took a moment and pulled out some Frye & Takayama level strikes, before Kingston nailed the enziguri. Punk fired back with the GTS, but couldn’t follow up.

Kingston launched an uraken, but Punk dodged and would nail some knee strikes. The fans were on the side of Kingston, but a Go To Sleep closed the match off in favor of Punk. To quote Jim Ross – “What a goddamn fist fight.” Respect was earned, but Punk wouldn’t get his handshake.

With the story being told, you weren’t getting a clean wrestling match. This was a fight with wrestling rules keeping things fair, something different from the CM Punk return, and something Kingston is very comfortable in. Add in a dash of Kings Road and some WWE call backs from Punk, and you have something very unique. Match Rating: 4.5/5 (**** 1/2)
