Tay Conti has become a major star for the AEW Women’s division since she made her debut during the Deadly Draw tag team tournament. She’s worked her way up through the ranks by winning matches on AEW Dark, and had one of the best matches of her career when she challenged Hikaru Shida for the AEW World Women’s Championship. However, things wouldn’t have been going as well for Conti if he wasn’t granted her release back in 2020 from WWE NXT.
Tay Conti Was Denied Her Released From WWE
It might come as a surprise that Conti was even in WWE, due to how low on the card she was. Mainly relegated to live events or squash matches, Conti was ready to get out and find out who she really was in the ring. She has now revealed on the AEW Unrestricted podcast why WWE originally denied her a release.
“I was so unhappy there that I didn’t have any plans. I was just like, I want to get out of here. I’m not happy, and I never thought about, oh, what am I gonna do if they give me my release? I never thought about it. I was like, I just need to be done with them, and of course, they said no a couple times. We were having a bunch of meetings. I was like, nope, I’m just done. Please let me go. So at the last one, they told me, ‘No, you’re not going,’ and they mentioned AEW.”
She’d go on to mention that not wanting to her go to AEW was the main reason they didn’t want to let her go. At the time, she had zero contact with AEW and no real plan, so saying that she didn’t plan to go to AEW wasn’t exactly a lie. In the end, that is where she ended up. If WWE invested into her and gave her TV time, they would have had a star. But now, she’s another one who got away.
