It’s not every day you get to enter a ring as AEW World Champion. Only three men have been able to do this, Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley & Kenny Omega. However, tonight that changes – as in his home state, Hangman Page hits the ring for National Cowboy Shit day. The fans have wanted to see him with this belt for a very long time, and tonight they finally realize Full Gear was no dream.
Before we got to that, we heard from The Elite. They all lost at Full Gear, and Omega has changes to make – and trusts Cole & Young Bucks to hold down the fort while he’s away. Omega is set to perhaps get shoulder surgery, and this seems to be the way to get him off TV.
Hangman Page Doesn’t Deserve It, He Earned It – And Bryan Danielson Earned His Shot
Page would hit a Dark Order filled ring with the AEW World Championship around his waist. Cowboy Shit chants rained down onto Page, a hero’s welcome for what is essentially a hometown boy. They’d morph into the ‘You Deserve It’ chants, but Page shut them down. He doesn’t deserve it, he earned it – and the crowd would fix their chant.
Page is a big shy and reserved, but now that he’s champion – he has the confidence to get on the microphone. However, he’s still a man with a boss like everyone else, but his boss is the fans of AEW. He does this for us, and coming from him, that feels genuine. The AEW World Championship is a bit of a burden, and Page knows who is first – The American Dragon.
Bryan Danielson would make his way out as if on cue, and he had one thing to say. Congratulations to the new champion. He’s super excited for this match, and surprised but a bit let down it’s not Kenny Omega. It’s not Omega because Page beat his ass at Full Gear, and in less than 30 minutes. Danielson isn’t trying to cause issues, but he won’t be wrestling one of the ghostbusters.
When Danielson won the World Championship at Wrestlemania, he was in the ring the next day. He’d get boo’d for the mention of Wrestlemania. Page would say there’s no reason they can’t have this match tonight, and the crowd wants it. Normally he’d be up for this – he’s got his gear on, and Page doesn’t.
Danielson doesn’t want excuses when he beats Page, he wants him perfectly ready. Dark Order held Page back, and the crowd wanted this fight. Instead, they’ll have to settle for Evil Uno vs. Danielson, which was already booked for tonight.
Evil Uno Fights An Emotional Battle Against Danielson
With tensions high after that opening segment, this one started off fast. Danielson would take down Uno into a single leg crab – and held on till 5 on the rope break. Uno would nail a big shoulder tackle, before a stomp the hand and a quick roll up for a two count. Danielson would take a chop and slap the taste out of the mouth of Uno in response.
Uno would be driven into the corner with some heavy kicks, but came back with his hands behind his back – welcoming the worst to come. Danielson tried to shove him away, before Uno unloaded with a Violence Party in the corner. Uno would hit the step up hurricanrana, before blocking a kick into a neckbreaker for two. Danielson would come back with a massive rolling elbow, before slapping Uno silly in the corner.
Uno would take two running dropkicks in the corner before hitting a running big boot. The swanton bomb was blocked, and Uno took the running knee strike. This could have been it, but Danielson chose to kick the head of Uno in and tap him out instead.
We’re seeing another side of Bryan Danielson now, as he leans into the hard hitting and sadistic style that Ring of Honor fans fell in love with. It’s been a while since it’s been shown fully, but we saw shades in his matches with Suzuki & Kingston. Uno proved to be a great wrestler here, and the story was perfect here. Match Rating: 3.75/5 (*** 3/4)
After the match, Tony Schiavone would interview Danielson. Danielson would say he came out to congratulate Page, but because of how be behaved, Uno got his head kicked in. He will tear down The Dark Order piece by piece, and next time it’s going be Chicago’s own Colt Cabana. Will Bryan Danielson ensure an early end to the reign of Hangman Page?
