Ric Flair has shown he’s not afraid to say what he thinks, and he gave us some great moments in this week’s Ric Flair Whooooo Nation Uncensored #3.
One of the main topics was the fan’s attack on Seth Rollins last week, and Ric had some thoughts on the Rollins’ comments to TMZ the next day.
It’s great that no one was hurt in the attack and Rollins can open up about it and admit his feelings, it’s something old school wrestlers and fans take offense at as it crossed the kayfabe line.
While the WWE blew the line away in the 90s, its’ further gotten wiped away by various podcasts, books, and interviews where wrestlers open up about their careers to share it with the fans.
It’s a great time, but being as honest as Rollins was following the attack doesn’t mesh with his character and they may be a step too far over the kayfabe line for many.
Act like a heel
It wasn’t that long ago when wrestlers maintained their heel persona in public to maintain the suspension of disbelief for fans. They wouldn’t be seen traveling together, or drinking in a bar together, or being civil to each other in public.
It just wasn’t done, and Rollins admitting he was terrified when he was attacked is a point of contention for Ric.
Special thanks to Wrestlinginc.com for the following transcript.
“In all fairness, I could say a lot of cute things, but I’m not going to,” Flair began. “Every time I say something, I have to involve other people and they have to endure the consequences, so I’m just going to say this. I’ve seen that happen, but I’ve never seen it where I recall the mark, the fan, clearly was getting the better of the individual.
“My problem with Seth is if you’re a top guy in this business, and you know anything about the psychology of what the fans think and feel, which they really do, you never, ever, ever, get off an airplane in L.A. and say, ‘I was terrified.’ Terrified of what? Terrifying is being in an airplane crash.
“You were terrified or horrified by a wrestling fan? Come on, man. What I would have done if I was Seth, which everybody should learn from this, is that even if the referees had him, I would have jumped back on him, even if I never got a shot at him. I know your answer is going to be, ‘Well, there’s lawsuits and all of that’. The WWE would have covered the lawsuit. Seth never would have got to him.
“If you’re a heel, you never admit defeat. You just don’t do it. Do you think I’ve ever beat anybody? No, but in the minds of most people, I didn’t lose because I kept lying about it even though it was a work. You never admit you got your ass kicked, much less being horrified or terrified. Please.”
We love how Ric started it off by saying others can learn from this, and it’s understandable that Rollins didn’t do what Ric suggested because of the shock and surprise of the attack.
Also, the threat of a lawsuit and because Rollins is a great person that doesn’t want to hurt anyone.
But staying in character is the best way to help keep fans into it as we believe what we see, even if our brain tells us something else.
Rollins is one of the best in the business, and Ric showed we never stop learning.
