It will be a while before the next PPV event from All Elite Wrestling, but they do a good job holding fans over. The WWE PPV schedule had fans used to monthly big events, but AEW treats every Wednesday as a big event. They don’t save huge matches for their paid events, knowing their TV deals are their bread and butter. However, starting in January – we add another ripple to how AEW runs with a Saturday Night Special.
Battle Of The Belts Will Only Be One Hour Long
This will start with Battle of The Belts on January 8th. The title alone had fans incredibly excited, with images of champion vs. champion matches in their heads or a vast card of title defenses. However, AEW owner Tony Khan has confirmed what this event will be – in an attempt to temper the expectations of fans. While speaking on Culture State, Tony Khan would state the following about the event.
“No, it’s a one hour show. It’s a one hour event, so I can’t put every belt on the line. It’s a great chance on a Saturday night to expand the reach of AEW by giving the fans great championship matches, which is a night that we know people love watching wrestling, that you can build an audience, especially for a big event. So, there’s going to be big championship matches, I’m very excited about it.”
One Match Confirmed, Two More Possible
Right now, we already have one confirmed match for the event. Britt Baker will defend the AEW Women’s Championship against Riho, who earned the title match by defeating Baker on Rampage in a “Black Friday Deal” match. We can assume that we will likely have at least two more matches added to this event.
A defense of the TNT Championship is easy, with a match between Sammy Guevara & Andrade El Idolo. Guevara needs to get past Cody Rhodes first, but American Top Team is likely to find a way to screw over Rhodes. Meanwhile, Andrade has been looking for a signature win – and the TNT Championship could be perfect for him.
Another possible title match could see The Lucha Bros take on either Jurassic Express or Santana & Ortiz. They seem to be the next teams in line, with Jurassic Express expected to get their shot fairly soon.
