Right now, there are two companies at the top of the pro-wrestling landscape in WWE. While WWE brand themselves as ‘Sports Entertainment’, their roots are clear and no amount of effort has gotten them away from the title. Meanwhile, All Elite Wrestling honors the past of professional wrestling constantly, being unapologetic with embracing all aspects of the sport. This even includes some downright gory hardcore bouts, which has WWE taking shots at AEW.
WWE Views AEW’s Use Of Blood As A Shameful Thing
Right now, WWE has taken aim at AEW in an article published in The Toronto Star. They used the recent tag team street fight between the duo of Penelope Ford & The Bunny and TayJay to detail how different both companies can be. The statement from WWE said the following.
“If you look at the gory self-mutilation that bloodied several women in the December 31 event on TNT, it quickly becomes clear that these are very different businesses.”
It is certainly a good example of the differences between the companies – but many fans don’t see this as a bad thing. It also comes off as WWE ignoring some of the bloody matches they’ve had over their long history, with a great example being the submission match between Steve Austin & Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 13. WWE has a tendency to make the past whatever they want it to be – and this is another example of that. Even looking to recent years, WWE has had Randy Orton burn The Field alive, and Seth Rollins try to blind Rey Mysterio with steel steps, by jamming his eye into the corner.
Most Fans Love AEW Not Being Squeaky Clean
When it comes to that Street Fight, it’s just another example of AEW not ignoring the bloodlust of wrestling fans. They don’t run a squeaky clean PG product, and that grit is sometimes what has them bringing in lapsed fans. AEW has no issues using blood to push an angle, with it being used recently in elevating the recent fight between Bryan Danielson & Hangman Page on January 5th.
Since their inception, AEW have almost been proud to be the anti-WWE. While some comparisons are hard to avoid, their focus on in-ring action, and long term storylines. Generally, fans have been a lot more positive towards AEW, with even long-term fans starting to stray away from WWE as their product gets stale. Even hype for their upcoming Royal Rumble is lower than expected, with WWE hiring seat fillers to pad out the crowd for this show which generally would have been able to pack an arena full.
