When Bryan Danielson vs. Hangman Page started their match at AEW: Winter Is Coming, no one expected it to take the full first hour of the show. However, they’d pass every time milestone on the way to the first ever sixty minute time limit draw in company history. By the end, Bryan Danielson still looked like he was ready to go another hour – as did Hangman Page. However, if you had told Danielson he’d have an hour-long match in WWE, he wouldn’t have believed you.
Bryan Danielson Sees Time Limit Draws As Just Another Story Telling Device
While speaking with Asbury Park Press – Danielson would talk about his time limit draw with Page. He’d have the following to say in regards to having a match that long.
“If you would have told me at the beginning of the year that I would do a 60-minute match on television, I would have been like, ‘Where’s that happening? So I’ve had some really cool surprises this year.”
This is the second time limit draw Danielson has had since arriving in AEW, with the first being a thirty minute clash with Kenny Omega – his debut match for the promotion. Some fans aren’t pleased about the time limit draws, but Danielson sees no issue with them.
“It’s just a story device, right? And it’s interesting to me in the sense of sporting events, and especially when you’re looking at MMA or boxing and the idea that there are draws in boxing and there are draws in MMA … Usually what it does is it’s a mechanism to lead to a rematch.”
Building Up More Hype For The Rematch
It’s hard to deny that the hype is even bigger for Page vs. Danielson after their time limit draw. Everyone is clamouring to know when the rematch is, as they gave us all that action – but people are still wondering what else they have up their sleeve.
This is the sign of a good time limit draw, and it’s something that has been used quite often over the years. It was used very commonly back in the territory days and beyond, only really falling out of fashion when TV became the main way to show off professional wrestling.
You don’t want to give up an hour of screen time to one match, at least not often. However, it’s hard to deny it’s better than an unsatisfying DQ finish – which AEW has avoided as a storytelling device so far.
