Another iteration of AEW Dark is coming to us tonight. The #SearchForSpears takes a turn tonight when Shawn teams up with Robert Anthony against SCU. In spite of everything, this is actually a very unique and special episode. The prevailing circumstances have hit indy wrestling pretty hard. WrestleMania weekend and the weeks surrounding it were meant to be a series of huge dates, traditionally it’s where promoters and workers alike make their most money. That all had to be cancelled of course and it’s put many of them in a rough and uncertain spot.
So tonight’s “double” episode of Dark includes more matches than usual and features seven workers whose dates were cancelled. It’s a series of paydays to folks who need them and a general urge to support one another in these trying times. I applaud this effort and hope they can continue using Dark this way in the coming weeks. All that said, let’s get to previews…
Robert Anthony & Shawn Spears vs. SCU (Christopher Daniels & Frankie Kazarian)
We start with perhaps the most intriguing match of the night. The #SearchForSpears has gone on for some time. Shawn Spears and his manager Tully Blanchard have been on the look out for a fitting tag partner and have taken loads of online submissions from fans and indy workers alike. Tonight, for the first time, he’s actually giving one of the applicants a shot.
Robert “Ego” Anthony, aka Egotistico Fantastico, has been wrestling all over since debuting in 2001. His most successful stint was in CZW where he held three of their singles titles, including their world championship. Among all the applicants, Anthony was pegged by many to be one of the more likely candidates to actually get the spot. So it’s pretty interesting to see him teaming with Spears here this evening. It’s hard to say for sure if the search is over or not, though I have to think that when Spears does finally find his partner, the team will be christened with a victory. And coming out of nowhere to beat SCU would be quite the upset indeed.
While their most pushed member in Scorpio Sky is under quarantine, I still think beating Frankie Kazarian and Christopher Daniels right out of the gate might be asking a lot. So I figure that Anthony will get to show his stuff here but ultimately come up short. SCU over. How impressed Spears will be with this, who can say…
