Another iteration of AEW Dark is coming to us tonight. Indy grappler Suge D takes on Superbad Kip Sabian in one of many unique match-ups. In spite of everything, this is actually a very significant, special episode. Ongoing circumstances have hit indy wrestling pretty hard. WrestleMania weekend and the weeks surrounding it were meant to be a series of huge dates for indy wrestling, as has become an annual tradition. It’s where a lot of promoters and workers alike make the bulk of their money. But that all had to be cancelled along with most everything else, and it’s put many of them in a rough and uncertain spot.
So tonight’s “double” episode of Dark includes more matches than usual which in turn allows AEW to feature seven workers whose dates were cancelled. It’s a series of paydays to folks who need them and a general urge to support one another in these trying times. I applaud this effort and hope they can continue using Dark this way in the coming weeks. That said, let’s get to the previews…
Suge D vs. Kip Sabian w/ Penelope Ford
Suge D is apparently short for “Sugar Dunkerton”. And uh, considering that, yeah, I’d have shortened it too~! Suge has been a wrestler since 2006. A true journeyman, he’s wrestled for IPW, PCW, CZW, IWC, IWA Mid-South, RevPro, EVOLVE, Impact and a ton of other places. Now he can add AEW to that list. But he’s gonna have a tough time making a success of this debut going up against Superbad Kip Sabian.
Slowly but surely, they’ve started to get Sabian and his girlfriend Penelope Ford more involved in prime time. Sabian’s biggest heat so far has actually been when the situation is reversed and he’s the one managing Ford, as people always got on him big anytime he tripped up a lady and tried to help. And of course that leads to a huge pop whenever he takes one of their moves. Of course that’s not gonna be happening at the moment…
Either way though, the Superbad duo are gaining credibility week to week in AEW and I can’t see it being derailed with a surprise loss right here. Kip Sabian to win, of course. Honestly most of this night will be easy to predict but that’s okay, it’s not really the point.
