AEW Dynamite continues. We see a replay of Shawn Spears getting a victory over Billy Gunn on this week’s episode of AEW Dark. They pretty much never do that, so that’s pretty cool. It leads to Shawn coming out for a match against the one and only Justin Law!
Shawn Spears vs. Justin Law
Spears smiling brightly as the bell rings. Spears takes control of him quick and takes him over with a snapmare. Spears clearly not taking this too seriously. Lock-up, Law with a wristlock but Spears gets him again with a snapmare and starts condescendingly talking him up. Gets down on his hands and knees in the prone position, giving him the free shot to take him to his back. Law does indeed get him with a waistlock takeover for a 2 count!! Almost got him right there and now Spears is furious, chopping him into the corner, Short-Arm Clothesline! And there’s the C-4 for the victory.
Winner: Shawn Spears
A quick squash, pretty funny moment there as he was in trouble purely because of his own arrogance. Ultimately still put him down easy. Seems like with a lot of the roster currently unavailable Spears is getting a bigger push at the moment. We know next week that we’ll be seeing Jimmy Havoc vs. Orange Cassidy, that sure sounds like a bizarre one. Kenny Omega and Brodie Lee are being advertised for next week as well. Josh Tompson of Bellator MMA, you’ll never guess, picks Jake Hager to win! As does Santana.
And now, with over half an hour left in the program, we move onto the big main event. This is gonna be a battle… Jon Moxley makes his way through the crowd area as usual, he’s wearing camo shorts for this one, kind of a Bully Ray style to his pants. Jim Ross is on solo commentary tonight seems like.
No Holds Barred Match For The AEW World Championship: Jon Moxley (c) vs. Jake Hager
Feeling out period, Mox forces him into the corner. Hager reverses and drives him against the buckles. Mox shoves him away. Tentative. Hager comes in close, Mox reverses a lock-up and gets him into the corner again. Singles out a leg, and though it takes some work he gets him with a back heel trip. Trying for a pin but Hager is keeping his shoulders up. They scramble back up to their feet, Hager gets Mox down with a front facelock, Moxley counters into an attempt at an armbar, Hager is keeping him from extending though. Gets him onto his back and drills him with a punch to the face!
Very unique vibe to this match, trying to work a bit shoot-style. Mox wants to pick the ankle but Hager is staying upright, mounts his back, but Mox escapes, legs get tangled for a moment as Hager gets him down and perhaps wants the Ankle Lock but Mox grabs the ropes and there’s a break. Hager powers Mox into the corner and there are the driving knees to the gut! Slams Moxley facefirst into a top buckle, Moxley with knife edge chops!
Hager is trying to absorb but they’re knocking him back, Moxley with some driving elbows to the crown of the head, gets him down a double wristlock, turns it into an STF but Hager’s fighting to keep it from being cinched in. Moxley can’t quite get it, Hager reverses into a sleeper, another knee to the kidney. So far Mox hasn’t managed to do much damage. Hager with some stomps to the chest. Exchange of punches as Mox fights his way to his feet, Hager with a whip but it’s reversed, Mox with a knee lift to the gut, throws Hager from the ring and he collides with the barricade! Moxley with a tope drives right through him! Mox with a cross-armbreaker cinched in, the ref seems to be explaining it’s not falls count anywhere but he can work over the arm regardless. Hager elbows his way free as we go to commercial break.
As we come back they’re still out there in the ground, Hager whips Moxley into the barrier. Mox comes back up with a rake of the eyes and throws him over the railing. Jumps over the railing and whips Hager into the tarped off stands! Wants a Gotch Style Piledriver but Hager back body drops him onto concrete! Hager taking Mox over into the bleachers now, leans him against the rail and kicks him square in the face! Straight right to the ear and Mox is reeling now. Wants some separation, trying to put some chairs between himself and Hager. Jake slowly advances, Mox surprises him with some knee shots to the gut, takes him down, figure four leglock cinched around the railing! And the ref actually is asking for a submission here it looks like, so it may well be falls count anywhere! Hager manages to free himself by hammering the legs.
Trying to crawl away, Mox is in control now, nailing him with chops! Hager staggers back, they’re towards the barrier now. Mox with a headlock and takes him over to an open space of concrete. Hager reverses a whip and sends him straight into the railing! Hager hoists him up and drops him ribsfirst onto the rail! Mox’s shoulder took some damage as well. Hager grinds a knee into his chest and Mox yells “Screw you!” and spits into his face. Hager pulls him up and tosses him to the ringside area. Hager whips Mox hard into the steps, targeting the shoulder yet again! Hager stares coldly into the camera and poses for a moment before tossing Moxley into the ring. Mox pulls himself up directly into a hard clothesline but Hager no sells! Whips him hard into the corner, tries for the Hager Bomb but Mox avoids it, big running high knee nails flush!
Back on their feet with elbows exchanging, Hager with some knees but Mox blocks at first, eventually Hager nails some knee strikes to the chin though, Doctor Bomb for a nearfall! Commercial break. As we come back, Hager hits the ropes for a big driving lariat in the corner! And another and another! Pulls him out for a Short-Arm Clothesline but Moxley ducks and gets him with a big clothesline of his own! Pulls him up slow, wants the Gotch Style Piledriver again but this time Hager with a leg pick, into the Ankle Lock! But Mox with an inside cradle counter for 2, Hager with a back elbow out of the corner, actually tries to come off the second rope but Mox gets him with a kick to the gut into the Double Arm DDT!
Can’t quite cover though and Hager sneaks him into the Arm Triangle! Mox is struggling now. Moving very slow to get to the ropes and the ref calls for the break, Hager holds on for an extra couple of seconds. Hager sends more punches into his face, Mox trying to scream and fire up but Hager with another haymaker takes him right out of the ring. Hager picks up a steel chair and drives the top of it right into his gut! Shoots a knee right into the steel to wedge it a little further! Hager is sweating like crazy, I can’t imagine he’s had a match this long in quite a while. Throws Moxley into the ring. Wedges a steel chair into the middle rope. Hoists him onto his shoulders and wants to drive him into the chair but Mox escapes, hits the ropes but Hager evades and sends him right into the chair! Cover for a nearfall!
Commercial break. Hager pulls the chair out from the ropes. Nails Moxley right in the leg with the chair! And now the Ankle Lock is cinched in! Mox is struggling mightily and cursing up a storm! Demands that he break his f**king ankle, he’s being bleeped and it’s kinda hilarious. Mox reaching for the rope but Hager pulls him away, roll through takes Hager to the outside! Hager rushes right back into the ring but a Double Arm DDT takes him down and Mox turns it into a Guillotine Choke with a Body Scissors! But Hager still fighting his way up here with Mox on top of him! Escapes the hold and an exchange of strikes starts once more. Mox wins out with forearms, hits the ropes but eats another forearm, Hager hits the ropes, and there’s a running knee to the groin! Hager takes a moment to breathe, but Moxley throws the chair right into his face! Paradigm Shift onto the chair and that is that.

Exhausting fight there. Certainly unique, a pretty believable bout as far as a no holds barred pro wrestling match goes. Mox celebrates with his title and gazes into the camera, says 2020 is his year and nothing will stop it. Claims that AEW is the hottest promotion in the world and he’s on top. Says he’d do this in the parking lot, he’ll meet him at the Waffle House, doesn’t matter how many people are watching.
