AEW Dark begins, Taz and Excalibur are back in action for this one, it’s being called a Supersized edition of Dark and that seems about right to me. We’ve got nine matches on tap tonight, the show comes out to an hour and 13 minutes. The Captain Shawn Dean is out here first, the navy serviceman, here to face off with Colt Cabana in the first match of the evening. Before the match, Colt takes his time carefully folding his shirt before callously throwing it out of the ring.
Colt Cabana vs. Shawn Dean
Colt fakes high but then gets Dean down with a single leg. Dean scrambles to the bottom rope for a break. Colt feigning high again but Dean not falling far it. Cabana with a side headlock takedown. And there’s another one. Dean shoots him off but Cabana plows through him with a shoulder block. Colt with a top wristlock, takes him to the mat. Dean kips up, but gets taken right back down. Colt wringing the wrist. Dean kips up once more and tries to get a better position, tripped again and the next time he tries it Colt goes up with him and rolls him into a body scissor, spins into a cover for 2! Dean with a leap frog into a dropkick, takes Colt to the floor.
Shawn Dean gives Colt a salute. Cabana gets himself checked by the ringside doctor. Back into the ring. Test of Strength commences, Colt wins out and pins for a couple of 1 counts, armscissors as he takes Dean down again. Dean fights his way up, flips to a reversal and nails Cabana with a big forearm! Deep cover for 1. Waistlock roll into a couple of covers, nothing getting much. Colt drives himself into the corner to break the grip around the waist. Dean with some shoulder thrusts in the back. Charges but meets a couple of Blade Chops. Cabana with a series of rights, Bionic Elbow, Flying Apple in the corner! Trips him down and leaps into the Superman Pin just about out of nowhere and that is that!
Winner: Colt Cabana
Extremely basic match there but Colt’s able to make pretty much anything entertaining. Something that was interesting is that the referee and the ringside doctor both had surgical masks on, which was not a thing during Dynamite as I recall.
