The talk of the wrestling world is the return of Sting. After years away following his first retirement in 2015, the 61 year old icon is back in the mix as part of All Elite Wrestling. Almost everything feels just right with him there. He’s back on TNT after almost two decades, still has fantastic presence, and proved over the past week that he never lost his skills on the microphone. However, the plan seems to be that Sting intends to get into the ring and wrestle once again as part of his new multi-year deal. Will AEW actually go through with this?
Sting Has A Chance To End His Career On His Own Terms
At 61 years old, Sting is not getting any younger, and he didn’t get to choose when he retired back in 2015. It was a forced retirement due to injuries suffered after a Buckle Bomb from Seth Rollins at that year’s Night of Champions PPV event. That is never easy, especially for someone like Sting, who after decades of giving his all in the ring, has to hang up his boots due to a simple mistake.
Sting tried his best to get another match in WWE, pitching matches with The Undertaker but getting shot down by Vince McMahon. Now, he’s got another chance to write the final chapter of career himself. This is a chance for him to take his career into his own hands, and maybe show fans that age in this case is just a number. He’s looked to be in fantastic shape during his appearances for AEW, but clothing could be helping him out there.
One perk of the scenario of Sting getting back in the ring, is that he was never known for being a risky worker. His iconic moveset is simple, and a match from him at this point could simply consist of punches, a Stinger Splash in the corner, the Scorpion Death Drop and finally the Scorpion DeathLock, and fans would be ecstatic for just getting to see that. His opponent will be doing the bulk of the work, and they’ve almost set him up with the perfect name to work with.
AEW Set Him Up With A Safe Opponents In Cody Rhodes
While a match with Darby Allin was lightly teased, the match with Cody Rhodes seemed to be the focus at this time. Rhodes can be given a lot of flack, most of it deserved, but one thing that even his biggest detractors can say is that he’s a very safe wrestler. You never hear of him injuring opponents, and is often able to bring out the best in anyone he faces.
Look at his match with Dustin Rhodes back at Double or Nothing 2019 for proof of this. They put on a classic match, without having to take any major risks. Storytelling was the focal point, instead of fast paced action. That style is what Rhodes thrives on, and would do a lot to protect Sting. It also gives something very different from what is often provided by AEW in the ring.
Darby Allin Could Prove To Be Another Safe Bet, In It’s Own Way
While Rhodes could be trusted to bring out a solid match out of Sting in the ring, a match with Darby Allin is another story all together. Allin isn’t known for dramatic storytelling, his matches being more fast paced car crashes full of high spots and risks. That doesn’t suit an Old Man Sting at all, but another part of Allin is perfect.
Allin is also known for his dramatic vignettes based around insane stunts with gritty production values, yet that hasn’t manifested into a cinematic match yet. This could be the route to take with Sting, as it allows for a safe environment for him to have a match, while minimizing risk. It could also help bring Allin into icon status, if done right.
