There was another action packed weekend of Premier League action, with the biggest game of the weekend taking place at Anfield on Sunday afternoon. The defending champions welcomed the runaway leaders to Merseyside knowing the only a win would be enough to reignite their chances of winning back-to-back titles this term.
However, Manchester City produced one of the performances of the season in the second period to leave Jurgen Klopp sweating as to whether his Reds will be able to secure a top four finish, let alone mount a title challenge in the second half of the campaign.
Soccer News: Manchester City Hammer Liverpool
Manchester City travelled to Anfield aware of the fact that they hadn’t won away at Liverpool since 2003. They were given the perfect opportunity to go into the lead in the first half after Raheem Sterling was tripped by Fabinho. However, Ilkay Gundogen skied his penalty kick over the cross bar. However, it wasn’t long until the Liverpool resistance was broken in the second period, as Gundogen made amends for his shocking effort from the penalty spot.
The Reds were able to get back on terms just after the hour mark, when Mohamed Salah dispatched his penalty past Ederson. That was as good as it would get for Liverpool, as they were blown away in the final 20 minutes by the current league leaders. Gundogen added his second of the game, before Sterling scored against his former side after fabulous work by Phil Foden. Both goals came after errors from Alisson Becker in the Liverpool goal. City capped a fine afternoon for the club with a fourth goal, which was scored by the excellent Foden with seven minutes remaining.
Soccer News: Chasing Pack Falter
City went into the game at Anfield knowing that they could go five points clear of Manchester United in the league, after the Red Devils threw away leads on two occasions on Saturday night against Everton. United went into the break in a commanding position after goals from Edinson Cavani and Bruno Fernandes. However, Everton pulled themselves level after just seven second half minutes.
The Red Devils went back ahead with 20 minutes remaining after Scott McTominay headed home, but a late Dominic Calvert-Lewin goal meant it was a case of what could have been for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. Leicester also lost ground on the leaders earlier in the day on Sunday afternoon, as they could only play out a 0-0 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
