Following in the footsteps of his rival Paul Wight, we have another giant from WWE having joined the AEW roster. Last night at their Double Or Nothing PPV, Mark Henry was announced to be joining the roster. He will be working with them as both a trainer, and a member of the commentary team for AEW: Rampage, which premieres this August on TBS. However, could Henry be ready to do more for AEW?
Mark Henry Was Gearing Up For One Last Match
The last time we heard from Mark Henry prior to this surprise debut, he was shedding pounds to perhaps wrestle one last match. Right now, his last singles match came in 2017 against Braun Strowman, and after that he wrestled two battle royales. While his career wasn’t always the greatest, no one deserves to have their final match be them as just one name in a fifty man battle royale.
He was hyping up a potential clash with WALTER in NXT UK, but now with him having joined AEW, that is sadly off the table. However, considering Sting wrestled last night in a tag team match alongside Darby Allin, we could easily see ‘The Worlds Strongest Man’ step into the AEW ring for a proper sendoff somewhere down the line.
Too Many Ex-WWE Names Being Signed?
However, Henry joining AEW has led to a bit of backlash from some fans. It’s the same old story you see from anyone who watches a non-WWE product, and that is AEW is signing too many ex-WWE names. In the past few months we’ve seen them bring in Christian Cage, Paul Wight, and now Mark Henry.
This is a valid criticism, but also something unavoidable for anyone who runs shows in the United States. WWE was the only major game in town for a long time, and AEW shouldn’t have to hold back hiring veterans just because they spent their career with WWE. Someone like Henry likely won’t be taking up much screen time that would go to younger talent, especially with his role being listed as an analyst for commentary and backstage trainer.
