For the better part of the past year, AEW have been working on building up one of the biggest trios matches in professional wrestling history. Starting the night after Full Gear 2021, when Kenny Omega begrudgingly left AEW to heal injuries – and put Adam Cole & The Young Bucks at the helm of The Elite, it began. Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish would find their way into AEW, and a rift began to form. The former Undisputed Era took control, and it seemed like it’d all be paid off with a massive trios match – but plans might have just changed.
Bobby Fish Is A Free Agent, AEW Might Need To Rush Huge Trios Clash
The AEW contract of Bobby Fish expired on August 31st, 2022. It remains unclear if there were talks to set up a new deal, with the deadline coming before an agreement – but it throws the plans of AEW up into smoke. Fish has been off TV due to injury, with his last televised match in AEW coming as part of the June 15th episode of AEW Rampage, where he lost to Darby Allin.
He’s been ready to return to the ring since mid August, with a match at DEFY Wrestling’s Doomsayers event against Yuya Uemura going off without a hitch. However, due to Cole & O’Reilly being unable to compete – they weren’t in the trios tournament. Fish is a freelancer as of the time of writing, meaning pay-by-appearance deals with AEW could be in the cards, and AEW could rush the conclusion of Undisputed Era vs. The Elite for Grand Slam in September.
WWE Return Seems Likely
Bobby Fish is someone who was close to Triple H during his time on the NXT brand, and with Triple H taking the reins in WWE – it’s likely a return could be in the work. Fish’s time in the ring is coming to an end, with age and injuries catching up to him – but he could well find a solid long-term role in WWE as a trainer or backstage agent.
Fish got the smallest deal out of the Undisputed Era members in AEW, with O’Reilly & Cole reportedly signing five year deals with the company. His return to WWE could see a tag team reunion with Roderick Strong in NXT, the last member of the once dominant faction left in WWE.
