GoFundMe has been busy steamrolling campaigns that have popped up in the aftermath of the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation/domestic violence trial. The most notable one removed was an obvious scam campaign, something that the platform regularly scraps.
GoFundMe Scraps $1 MILLION SCAMPAIGN for Amber Heard’s Legal Fees – Removing All Depp-Heard Trial Scampaigns
A campaign organizer going by the name of “Kimberly Moore” attempted to play up on the sympathy of those in Team Heard. The goal was set at $1,000,000 for Heard to pay off some of the $10 million shellacking she took on June 1, 2022. Heard would win $2 million on a separate count which still leaves her with over $8 million to pay.
Moore claimed she was in touch with Heard’s lawyers and said that the money from the campaign would go directly to the Aquaman actress. The GoFundMe featured several pro-Amber Heard posts but something smelled odd to GoFundMe—the familiar scent of a scam.
According to GoFundMe, the campaign was flagged early on as it couldn’t be confirmed if anyone from Heard’s legal team started the page. Even with that scam thwarted, the platform vows to continue taking down fraud campaigns.
Side-profiting isn’t anything new with this trial. Mind you, most of it has been legal such as somewhat tasteless promotions at some restaurants or Starbucks employees taking tips via allowing customers to tip according to whether they believed in Johnny Depp or Amber Heard.
However, scamming people out of their money on this case adds a film to the whole thing—but it’s definitely expected.
