Another week’s worth of AEW Dark is coming to us tonight. Indy wrestler Joe Alonzo gets a special opportunity tonight, facing off with the Inner Circle’s heavy Jake Hager. In spite of all that’s going down, this is actually a very unique and special episode. Ongoing circumstances have hurt everyone and every business. It’s hit indy wrestling particularly hard thanks to the timing. WrestleMania weekend and the weeks surrounding it were meant to be a series of huge dates for indy wrestling. It’s where a lot of promoters and workers alike make the bulk of their money, an annual tradition. But that all had to be cancelled along with nearly everything else, and it’s put many of them in a rough and uncertain spot.
In acknowledgement of this, tonight’s “double” episode of Dark includes more matches than usual which in turn allows AEW to feature seven workers whose dates were cancelled. It’s a series of paydays to folks who might seriously need them and a general urge to support one another in these trying times. I personally applaud this effort and hope they can continue using Dark this way in the coming weeks, I think it’s a very worthy cause. That said, let’s get to the previews…
Joe Alonzo vs. Jake Hager
Judging by twitter RT’s, Joe Alonzo is actually close with Jake Hager’s Inner Circle running mate Sammy Guevara as well as fellow guest Robert Anthony. Unfortunately, I’m not sure that’s gonna be enough to get the Big Hurt to go easy on him! Alonzo is the youngest of tonight’s seven guest stars at 22. He began wrestling in 2016, and he’s most notably worked for IWA Mid-South and IWC.

It’s simultaneously Alonzo’s AEW debut and Jake Hager’s AEW Dark debut. I’ve actually been waiting for the day when Hager gets to go up against one of the particularly small wrestlers in AEW and really get to look like a monster. Dustin Rhodes sells magnificently of course but he can’t exactly toss him around the same way as he could most in the company. Tonight he should have that chance, as Alonzo appears to be about the same size as Guevara. This does not bode super well for him but I’m sure he’ll give his best regardless. Jake Hager over though, obviously!
