The interim UFC heavyweight champion isn’t short of confidence a month out from UFC 270, where he’ll face former training partner and other heavyweight strap holder Francis Ngannou.
Cyril Gane’s highly technical striking style has sent him catapulting up the heavyweight ranks, and it’s exactly this meticulous approach that he expects to hand him the W in January.
Ciryl Gane Expects to “Manage” Francis Ngannou, Wants Jon Jones Next
Gane told BT Sport that Francis Ngannou’s power is something he fully expects to “manage” then the pair face off next month.
“I just started the sport, so imagine, tomorrow I’m going to win against Francis Ngannou, I’m going to be in the top, the baddest man in this world after just three years in MMA.
That’s really crazy. That’s wonderful. And yes, after that, if I win, this is going to mean something for real for me. Because after every fight, maybe you can see, I’m not really enjoying it when I win. I don’t know why exactly, I’m not excited about that. But if I win against Francis, I’m going to be happy. I’m going to be happy for real.
I think Francis did a lot these last years, and he probably improved and he’s more intelligent and that’s really great. He’s really well-rounded now, and I think it’s going to be more like that, because he knows I can manage the power. I think he knows I can manage the power. So maybe he should be a smart fighter.”
Ciryl Gane has ploughed through the heavyweight division since his arrival in the UFC. The 265-pound division was typically dominated by massive men with knockout power, but Gane, who is light on his feet and precise with his hands, specializes in neutralizing the sluggers and plodders.
Francis Ngannou is undoubtedly his most dangerous opponent yet, but “Bon Gamin” already has his eyes on another dangerous man: disgraced former UFC lightweight champ Jon Jones.
“He wants to go to this division, he wants to prove he can do it and he did a lot for that. Probably a fight against him would be really great for me because a lot of people compare the style, we’re well-rounded, good fight I.Q. Maybe it’s gonna be a great matchup, I think so, and probably it’s gonna be great for my pocket.”
Jon Jones is currently facing serious criminal charges after an arrest in Las Vegas for assaulting his fiancee and attacking a police vehicle. Jones’ long-awaited arrival in the UFC heavyweight division may never come if Jones is convicted.
