Ultimo Dragon Meets El Hijo del Santo, October 5th Pro Wrestling Revolution Main Event

The marquee match from Pro Wrestling Revolution’s (also known as Revolucion de la Lucha Libre) on October 5, 2019, was a Pro Wrestling Revolution Heavyweight Championship match between champion Ultimo Dragon and challenge El Hijo del Santo. Ultimo Dragon is famous for popularizing the ‘Lucharesu’ hybrid style of Lucha Libre and Puroresu around the world in the 1990s, holding 10 singles championships at once (mainly due to winning the in 1996), and building a legacy as one of the best wrestling trainers in the world. Dragon gave major New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) draw Kazuchika Okada his initial training in Mexico along with the likes of CIMA, Dragon Kid, Naruki Doi, Milano Collection AT, Shuji Kondo, Taiji Ishimori, and more.

El Hijo del Santo is the son of the legendary El Santo whose height of popularity may have surpassed any others in the history of professional wrestling. While ‘Santito’ may not be anywhere near the icon his father is, he was a major draw in Mexico for decades — winning a slew of championships in AAA, CMLL, Universal Wrestling Association, and World Wrestling Association.

Before the match got underway Border Patrol (JR Kratos/Pro Wrestling Revolution Junior Heavyweight Champion Colt Stevens) entered the ring and mocked the two enmascarados. After leaving Ultimo Dragon and El Hijo del Santo wrestled what was equivalent to an early to mid-1980s chain mat wrestling affair.

The mat work was clean and crisp, and neither took any high flying risks. Of note, they didn’t need to as the live audience was excited to see Santo back in California, wrestling against Ultimo Dragon. As Santo was locking Dragon in the La de a Caballo (Camel Clutch), Border Patrol ran from the back, attacked both competitors which led to the match being ruled a no contest.

Border Patrol then challenged Dragon and Santo to a match for February 22nd (2020), but a Pro Wrestling Revolution official made the team wrestle against the Technicos (Faces) immediately due to cheating the fans out of a special marquee match. It only took several minutes for Santo to submit Stevens with the La de a Caballo.

After the match, Dragon and Santo addressed the crowd that responded with a Lucha Libre tradition of throwing money into the ring after seeing a match worth high praise.

It would have been nice to have seen a longer one on one match between Dragon and Santo, but the entirety of the segment was good for what it was. If you haven’t ever seen either wrestle, this is a good opportunity for an introduction.
