Over the past few years, we’ve seen Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame attempt to bring the National Wrestling Alliance back to prominence. Things started off well, with the popular Ten Pounds of Gold YouTube series, some great matches between Nick Aldis and Cody Rhodes, and the solid debut of NWA Powerrr. However, since then – things have gone downhill, and even Nick Aldis is looking to leave the company in his rear view mirror, having already given them notice of his exit.
Nick Aldis Feels Most Of NWA In 2022 Would Not Pass “The Harley Race Test”
Recently, we would see Nick Aldis put a video up on Instagram declaring his intentions to leave the NWA. His contract was set to expire in January 2023, and Aldis gave the company notice that he will be leaving the company at that time – while also claiming he found the company embarrassing in 2022. Corgan responded by suspending him, and current NWA World Champion Trevor Murdoch would step up to defend the promotion.
However Nick Aldis would have a chance to speak on the NotSam podcast, where he would describe why he feels NWA has become embarrassing. He was quoted saying the following.
“Look, I can’t get around it. I’m not saying all of it, but there was enough of it that for me didn’t pass the Harley Race test. I started looking at stuff like Gags the Gimp, you know, a social distancing match where the two wrestlers can’t touch each other, ha, ha, ha. and, you know, on and on it went with different wacky, silly comedy, you know, nonsensical stuff, and I said, ‘How would I have justified this to Harley Race, like if Harley Race had been hit today? Imagine if I’d have stood there with Harley Race. What would Harley Race say watching this? Or Dory funk? Or Ric Flair?’ I thought if I stood here with those guys right now, I’d be kind of embarrassed. You know what I mean? Because they would look at me and go, ‘This is your thing?’ I have to go, ‘No’, and I didn’t want to be in a position where I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s not me.’”
The next moves of Aldis in professional wrestling remain unclear, with many feeling a WWE debut or Impact Wrestling return are the most likely options. Where would you want to see Nick Aldis in 2023? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
