Last night was the latest PPV from the National Wrestling Alliance – as Hard Times III would air on PPV through Fite TV. The card was topped off by a triple threat match for the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship, with Trevor Murdoch entering as champion. He’d defend against Matt Cardona & Tyrus – with Tyrus leaving as champion, in a choice that has already been critically panned as perhaps the last straw for the NWA.
Tyrus Is Now NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion
Best known for his time in WWE as Brodus Clay, Tyrus has been with the NWA for the past few years. His reign as NWA World Television Champion showed that the 49 year old was nowhere near a top talent, often being blown up moments into a match. Despite this, Billy Corgan has now made the chance to put the once prestigious NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship on him.
A reason for this is likely that Tyrus remains a contributor for Fox News, and putting the belt on him will get the belt on TV. He’s as close to a mainstream star as NWA has right now, making him their best bet to attract viewers to a product that has been on the downturn since 2020.
Nick Aldis Names The NWA The Most Toxic Brand In Pro Wrestling
Following this match, former NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion and recent face of the company Nick Aldis would further distance himself from the brand. Aldis had the following to say.
“I hope now you see why it was important to me to let you know that I had given my notice to the NWA BEFORE this ppv. What was once a promising endeavour that I turned down bigger opportunities to take the lead on, has become the most toxic brand in pro wrestling. Thank you all for the support.”
Aldis is currently suspended by NWA, with his contract expiring in January of 2023. He has made his intentions to leave the company very clear already, and this choice of booking might have justified it as the correct move.
