Let’s take a look at four of the best wrestling tie-ins from comics, manga, and film. There have been plenty of times when we’ve seen wrestlers and entertainers crossover but rarely do we see things carry over from the silver screen to the ring. Did some of your favorite wrestling tie-ins make the list? Tiger Mask and Jushin Thunder Liger The Tiger Mask character has been around since the 1970s and in wrestling since the 1980s. Jushin Liger has been around since the 1980s. Before that, both characters were manga series with Tiger Mask being true to its wrestling roots. New Japan Pro-Wrestling was quick to…
The Heroes of Wrestling PPV is often considered the worst PPV event of all time. On Cagematch, the match has an average rating of 0.83 out of 10. Wait, I’m sorry the rating is 0.38 out of 10. Just looking at the card, it looks unappealing for a show in 1999. It features a lot of veterans who were either past their ring date, just weren’t in the shape for PPV matches or both. Fans who either caught the show at the time or watched it years later pretty much dunk on this show because it didn’t come off as a decent…
WWE has produced a number of films via WWE Studios. Now, the studio never had the best track record with quality films but they had quantity on their side. Sadly, that means there is an abundance of bad or mediocre films. We’re going to look at the three best WWE Studios films of the 2000s. These are the more entertaining ones and don’t necessarily mean that they were really good–although two of them were. The Rundown (2003) This was the first proper film released by WWE Studios. I say “proper” because you had No Holds Barred but that was under the “Shane Distribution Company”. Starring The Rock, The Rundown showcased The Great One’s action and comedy…
In the early 1990s, there were a number of boxers making their names. At the top of the middleweight division were two pugilists: WBO Middleweight Champion “The Dark Destroyer” Nigel Benn and “Simply the Best” Chris Eubank. This duology of matches brought back that degree of drama and showmanship to boxing. The match itself wasn’t the only reason to follow Benn vs. Eubank I, there was some animosity between the boxers’ camps and that became evident in interviews and the day of the fight. Seeds of War Nigel Benn began his career in January 1987 and earned his “The Dark…
With nine defenses under his belt an MLW World Heavyweight title reign that just reached two years, Jacob Fatu has been MLW’s most dominant world champion. His reign surpassed Low Ki and Satoshi Kojima’s eight defense runs but the time off because of the pandemic meant that there were some defenses that never occurred. Think about: nine defenses in two years seems short—or the world of a champion who manages to skirt defenses. Fatu has never been one to run from a fight in MLW. Just point him at an opponent and he’ll smash them up in under 20 minutes. The Eventual…
We’re getting into episode two of Wrestling Society X which aired on MTV between 2006 and 2007. Our musical guests and guest commentators for the show are my favorite hip-hop group of all-time Three 6 Mafia. Well, the duo Three 6 Mafia. The group had pretty much whittled down the two sometime after they won an Oscar for the score to Hustle & Flow. Back to the wrestling! Let see what storylines we have going on here. Storylines in This Episode We have the aftermath of the WSX Rumble with 6-Pac taking on Vampiro to crown the first WSX Champion. Also, there’s Kaos and Aaron…
WWE’s ending 1996 with WWE In Your House 12: It’s Time. Featuring five main card matches, it took place on December 15 from West Palm Beach Auditorium in West Palm Beach, Florida. Our main event for this card sees WWE World Champion Sycho Sid defend his belt against Bret Hart. We also have WWE Tag Team Championship action with Owen Hart and The British Bulldog taking on the Fake Diesel and Fake Razor. The Intercontinental title is being defended as Hunter Hearst Helmsley defends against Marc Mero. Is WWE’s last hurrah for 1996 a loud one? Let’s dive into WWE In Your House…
Continuing with Into the Vault 1996, we’re diving into WCW World War 3 1996! This show took place at the Norfolk Scope in Norfolk, Virginia on November 24—the second time the event took place from the venue. Low-Tier The Giant vs. Jeff Jarrett wasn’t a dreadful match but wasn’t good either. This just wasn’t a match worth hyping. At this point in his career, Big Show was still pretty green but you could see that wrestling was clicking with him. However, his selling point was how impressive he looked and how menacing he was. If you had a smaller babyface and really wanted to make them look like the ultimate white meat babyface get yourself a monster. The biggest most consistent…
So, let’s keep it retro but get into a little something more recent—at least within the last 15 years or so. We’re definitely in the 21st century. Let’s look at MTV’s Wrestling Society X! If you enjoy loud, crash TV-style wrestling, WSX might be right up your alley. WSX is basically an Xtreme Pro Wrestling offshoot featuring a lot of the company’s alumni from staff to the commentary to the wrestlers. That means expect a lot of XPW flavor here. Storylines in This Episode The shows ran for 20-minutes at most of a 30-minute block. Our first episode doesn’t have much in the way of storylines. This…
The Undertaker vs. Mankind boiler room match from SummerSlam 1996 was groundbreaking for cinematic matches. It was just a brawl in the bowels of an arena but it was the start of these macabre theme matches. Classic Cinematic Matches One thing that the Boiler Room Brawl established was that these matches are often linked to bizarre and dark characters and often featured wrestlers who have a personality rather than an actual gimmick. Any wrestler can be involved in these matches but the anchor is always a wrestler who is larger than life. Bonus points if the wrestler is supernatural or something of that nature. These bouts take the wrestlers that would…
