It is Wednesday night, which means another show from All Elite Wrestling here this evening, AEW Dynamite! Cody Rhodes vs. Kip Sabian coming to us here tonight! I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer and you can expect the same coverage tonight as always!
This month has basically been chock full of special episodes. We began with the Homecoming event in Jacksonville on New Year’s Day, transitioned to the Anniversary special the next week, Bash at the Beach began after that, finishing with the show on the Jericho Cruise the week after! January has been a unique month to be sure, but we do finally seem to be calming down atleast a tad here. I mean, we only have four pre-announced things to look at here tonight, which for Dynamite is kinda small. But, I can’t say I mind, it’s already been a pretty big week in wrestling.
Kip Sabian vs. Cody Rhodes
This is actually the sole one-on-one match announced for AEW Dynamite here tonight. We have one singles, tag and trios match apiece in store. Kinda funny, that. Regardless, Kip Sabian is among the many young hopefuls in AEW that are looking to make a name for themselves sooner rather than later. His most notable feat up to this point is that he was on the opposite side of Sammy Guevara in the first ever regular match in AEW history. He’s a talented guy but can struggle to find room in the weekly two hour primetime block. Last match he had on Dynamite was on December 11th, where he teamed with Shawn Spears against Kenny Omega and Hangman Page, which did not go so well for him.
But while he hasn’t wrestled on Dynamite, he has appeared briefly for the sake of starting his feud with Joey Janela.
Sabian is of course the boyfriend of Penelope Ford, who broke up with Janela less than a year ago. I have a feeling this feud would be more featured if not for the Rusev/Lana business on Mondays already happening, but regardless, it is an ongoing angle all the same.
Cody Rhodes has frequently shown that he enjoys these kinds of matches against newcomers. Of course there’s his feud with Darby Allin, but also his bout with Sammy Guevara was heavily hyped, being the first match in Dynamite’s history. So it’s not really a surprise to see him here in this match. Cody will assuredly win, no doubt there really, but it should be a fun match.
