Jon Moxley vs. Jeff Cobb
A rematch from last year’s G1 Climax, where these two met one-on-one for the first time! I have a feeling that this one will feel a little bit different, though. After all, Cobb’s job tonight isn’t just to win, it’s to decimate Moxley and soften him up for Le Champion Chris Jericho at AEW Revolution. While not officially a part of the Inner Circle, not yet anyway, Jericho nonetheless picked quite the hitman to get the job done here tonight.
If you’ve never seen Jeff Cobb before, you are in for something special. The guy is a true beast. Billed at about 265lbs, Cobb is an Olympic-caliber wrestler, having represented Guam in the 2004 Olympic Games. He’s been a pro wrestler since 2009 and he first really picked up steam with Lucha Underground where he showed just how much of a freak athlete he really is. I think the simplest way to describe him is to take Scott Steiner, and mix that with a cruiserweight’s agility. Take the danger down a notch but bump the power up a touch and there you go, that’s basically it. All with a Samoa Joe-esque cool intensity. Cobb is something else alright.
Jon Moxley has had to wage a one-man war over the past couple of months and has run a major gauntlet, taking down Sammy Guevara, Santana and Ortiz in singles matches one-by-one. But this is by far his biggest roadblock yet on the path to Revolution. He’ll persevere but I wouldn’t be surprised if, after tonight, his eye isn’t the only bullseye on his body he’ll be left with… all the same, Moxley’s been on a huge winning streak and it makes no sense to drop it now, especially since Cobb is likely only here for a temporary stay. Mox over.
