Kurt Angle is now a man who is happily retired from professional wrestling, and sadly might be remembered as someone who kept going past his time. He had his final match at Wrestlemania 35 against Baron Corbin, and has since stayed true to that retirement. His body is in very rough shape, and that was the case during his final matches. Not even top level workers like Chad Gable or AJ Styles could make the legendary Angle look particularly good. However, one match on his retirement run will go down as one of the best in Monday Night RAW history, when he faced Drew McIntyre.
What Should Have Been Kurt Angles Retirement Match
The match came on the November 5th, 2018 edition of Monday Night RAW, and there was clearly something different about this match. There was stakes attached, as if Angle could win he would be named the captain of Team RAW for Survivor Series. However, unlike most matches for the legend that was Kurt Angle, he was not getting much offense in. He was completely eviscerated by The Scottish Psychopath, with Drew berating Kurt and even winning the match with Kurt Angles own finisher, the Ankle Lock. Many felt that this match was incredible, and should have been the retirement match for Kurt Angle. It showed that he was beyond his time, and this was basically Drew McIntyre taking him out back to end his suffering. Drew left it looking like an absolute killer of a heel, but that would not be his destined role in the company.
Kurt Angle Explains Why This Match Was Done This Way
While Drew is now the undisputed top babyface in the company, he was intended to be a top heel, with this match being the one that made him. Speaking with Sports Illustrated, Kurt Angle would say the following. “Vince McMahon came to me and said, ‘We’ve got to make this kid. Just do what you have to do to make him, so I sat down with Drew and told him that he was going to use my ankle lock. You can’t ask for a more dominating win than using someone else’s finisher on them.”
Angle did help to build up how dominant McIntyre is, just in the wrong role. Things have been corrected, and that match will remain almost a hidden gem of the Monday Night RAW catalog.
