A holdover from a bygone era, the concept of having a person to represent backstage power on camera is something that is dying. The only notable brand in wrestling that still uses this role is NXT with William Regal, who keeps off screen as much as possible, only interjecting himself when needed. Regal also has the perk of being involved as a trainer in the WWE Performance Center, which gives his role some legitimacy. However, shows like RAW & Smackdown have done away with this for the time being, and AEW has never taken this into play. Will it remain this way for the still growing company?
Tony Khan Is Not Secret In AEW
While AEW owner Tony Khan has yet to appear on TV for the company, he hasn’t been hidden either. During the build to Jon Moxley vs. Kenny Omega, Moxley would enter his office to complain that his upcoming match was deemed ‘unsanctionable’ and threatened to end their Golden Boy for it. This showed that AEW is not afraid to use Khan in this role if needed, and like Regal he would have some gravity in the role as he has more sway than anyone in the company. The issue with this outdated role is that fans know what it going on more than ever, and we know someone like Paige doesn’t actually have control over the Smackdown Brand. Khan is a wrestling fanatic and it is only a matter of time before he finds an on-screen role in the company.
Cody Rhodes Hopes AEW Never Uses This Trope
As an executive of AEW, Cody Rhodes will often be asked about various topics like this from fans. He was asked about authority figures in AEW and had the following to say. “Hopefully never. The audience isn’t dumb, they know who management is. Authority elements seem insulting in this era. This is just my opinion, as there’s a lot of fun ways to do this and I respect those.”
If AEW would ever bring this role to their programming, we can be assured it would be done in an interesting way, as they have a good track record. Would you want to see a General Manager type role put into play for AEW? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
