AEW Dark continues. Colt Cabana comes out here to face off with Lee Johnson. Something that’s been a running theme of this show is that Taz has been going hard about how he really doesn’t like, basically anybody on the AEW roster. He’s been pretty hateful. In this case he got offended that Colt waved to Excalibur but not to him, atleast that’s how he saw it. But then he also railed on Lee Johnson, asking why he was supposed to be all excited for his potential when he’s lost every match he’s had, even one to QT Marshall. It’s not a surprise given the events of Double or Nothing, with him managing Cage and leading him in a feud against Jon Moxley and presumably Darby Allin as well, but it’s certainly reinforcing him as a heel. AEW hasn’t really had a heel commentator before so it’s kind of interesting to see how they do it, it’s noticeable but a little bit more subtle than what I’m used to.
Colt Cabana vs. Lee Johnson
Handshake to start. Lock-up, Colt with a wrist lock. Takes him down, Lee kips up, Colt with a snapmare. Lee kips up, Colt with a big arm drag! Cabana decides against attacking him in the corner. Lee with a waistlock, Cabana leg trips him to avoid a takedown. Whips him to the corner, Lee with a floatover, Cabana holds his boot up, baits him into grabbing it, Cabana pushes his leg down to send Lee onto his stomach, wraps the legs around his waist to back roll him into a cradle for a nearfall! Very complex to type out but fun to see.
Colt gets him in a wristlock and has a big smirk on his face. Snapmare, crucifix for 2, then into a sunset flip roll for 2. Lee kicks out, Colt extends the boot again and Johnson grabs it again, costs him as Cabana turns it into an inside cradle for 2! Lee with a knife edge chop and Cabana smirks at him. Lee acts like he didn’t do anything… Colt hits the ropes but Lee with another knife edge chop! Takes him into the corner but Cabana reverses and nails him with a huge knife edge chop that drops him to the mat! Lee with a floatover on a corner whip, dropkick to the face! Cabana evades a charge, Flying Apple! Takes him out, combination of strikes and there’s the Bionic Elbow – Billy Goat’s Curse locked in for the win!
Winner: Colt Cabana
It’s definitely fun to watch Cabana go at it with an enhancement guy because he has no shortage of tricks and his more cartooney tactics fit well in a squash, but I’m not sure why they put him against other babyfaces so often. His ringstyle can just naturally make him seem like a jerk when he’s not going up against who’s asking for it, his whole thing is making people look stupid.
