Lucha Memes is one of the most prominent independent promotions in Mexico. The company features regular unsigned luchadors and the best from the top two companies in the country – AAA & CMLL.
This week, Jonathan Gresham, one half of the Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champions, announced that he will join forces with Lucha Memes.
Gresham wrestled numerous times in Mexico. In 2019, a hot year for the “octopus”, Gresham wrestled in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre, The Crash Lucha Libre, and Lucha Memes. In the latter, Gresham went against the outstanding Virus. Gresham was also The Crash Cruiserweight Champion. He beat the former champion, Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Champion and fellow ROH signee, Bandido. In that match, Flamita and Shane Strickland (now, Isaiah Scott in WWE NXT) were also present.
What Lucha Memes and Gresham look to do is an alliance to bring technical wrestling to Mexico and the company. In a video posted by Lucha Memes on Twitter, Gresham talks about the idea:
? ¡Nuevo proyecto en puerta! Les presento a mi socio en esta aventura ?
@TheJonGresham
…. Lucha Memes y “The Foundation” buscamos romper paradigmas y crear un concepto que inicie en México ?? pero que trascienda a nivel mundial. La segunda escala será en Estados Unidos.[A new project at the door! I present to you my partner in this adventure ?
@TheJonGresham
…. Lucha Memes and “The Foundation” we seek to break paradigms and create a concept that begins in Mexico ?? but that transcends worldwide. The second stop will be in the United States]
As Gresham explains in the video, Mexico has seen a rise in technical wrestling over the years. Some time ago, luchador veteran Negro Navarro had an outstanding classic against a young Zack Sabre Jr. Moreover, other wrestlers rose to prominence while using a technical style. In CMLL, Hechicero brings numerous holds into the ring. While in AAA, you have names like Daga having matches “a ras de lona”.
Fans envision Lucha Libre with masked wrestlers doing highflying moves, but some feel that the technical aspect is equally important.
It seems that the partnership will bring Gresham frequently to Lucha Memes. They want to first establish this new brand of wrestling info in front of the Mexican crowd. The mix of young Mexican luchadors that don’t want to fly through the ropes alongside Gresham could be promising.
For now, Lucha Libre in Mexico will be put on hold, as the Covid-19 virus keeps delaying the return for full capacity wrestling or even wrestling behind closed doors.
