Last night at WWE Payback, we got a new Universal Champion in a newly turned Roman Reigns. He allowed Strowman & The Fiend to tear each other apart before finally joining the match and waltzing away with the WWE Universal Championship. This makes one man’s guaranteed championship match even harder, this being the current Money In The Bank holder, Otis.
While Otis is a very popular name within WWE, many don’t see him getting the Universal Champion despite having a shot at any time he wants it. He’s far from proven in the ring, and considering who is running the main event? Otis might be well over his head on Smackdown.
Otis Is Stuck Between A Big Dog, Demon, and A Monster
The last good chance Otis had to cash in his Money In The Bank contract was the main event of Summerslam. Strowman & The Fiend had been laid out by Roman Reigns after a hard fought battle. While Otis might have had to deal with Reigns at this time, he very well might have been allowed to easily pin The Fiend. Otis would be a pushover for Reigns to have beaten to become champion, which is the core issue right now.
Compared to the rest of the main event scene on Smackdown Live, Otis might as well be Gillberg. All the raw power, heart and unpredictability are useless when you have a motivated Roman Reigns, pissed off Braun Strowman, and The Fiend. If he tries to cash in, he’d likely fail. Should he cash in and win? He’d be mauled by his overwhelming opposition.
Things Aren’t Much Better On Monday Night RAW
While Otis calls Smackdown Live home right now, he could try to go to Monday Night RAW to try for the WWE Championship. There he’d have to contend with an equally daunting level of competition. The reigning champion is Drew McIntyre, who has been unstoppable for months. Then there’s Randy Orton, who despite a loss to Keith Lee at Payback, has been taking people out left and right.
It’s less terrifying than the Smackdown title picture, but Otis would be just as outmatched there. He won the briefcase by pure happenstance, but unless a perfect chance arises, he might never find a chance to even tease a cash in. There was talk early on about him using it to get Heavy Machinery a title shot, but with how Smackdown Tag Team championship matches are handed out, it would be a waste; but maybe his only chance to use it productively.
