In every great career in professional wrestling, there is always going to be an off year. 2020 is seemingly that for Tommaso Ciampa. He came into the year with the momentum of a victory over Undisputed Era at WarGames, and a chance to regain the NXT Championship against Adam Cole. #DIY was back together, and they had a classic match with Tyler Bate & Trent Seven. It was going to be his year, then Johnny Gargano stabbed him in the back.
He would lose his championship match with Adam Cole NXT Takeover Portland, lose the final clash with Johnny Gargano in One Final Beat, and was beaten down by Karrion Kross at NXT Takeover: In Your House in just six minutes.
The Psycho Killer Is Back In Town
On the same night when it would be announced that he’d be in this game changing Fatal Four Way match, he made his return to NXT and tore Jake Atlas apart. This wasn’t the babyface Ciampa that came back in 2019, but rather the lunatic that went to war with the likes of Johnny Gargano & Aleister Black. The Psycho Killer is back, and this is the man who never lost his NXT Championship. Loss after loss has forced Ciampa to revert back to his old ways, go back to what he knows works for him.
Fatal Four Way matches generally don’t have DQ’s or count outs, with the usual rule being that pinfalls and submissions need to happen within the ring. If weapons are allowed, Ciampa will be the one to bring them into the mix, and is the best at using them.
The Redemption Arc Of Tommaso Ciampa Is One Of NXT’s Best Current Storylines
While 2020 has not been great for Ciampa, it’s just another part in his NXT story. He was put to the absolute bottom after his loss with Karrion Kross, but now has a chance to right that wrong. Had Kross not gotten injured during his match with Keith Lee, Ciampa would have been a prime candidate to take the fight to the new NXT Champion. He had more reason than ever to want to take Kross out, and regain the NXT Championship.
Now, he instead has to beat Johnny Gargano, Finn Balor, and Adam Cole, and he knows Kross will come to him if he’s NXT Champion. As far as storylines go, Ciampa is the most logical winner in this match, though Ciampa might need to suffer a bit more before he gets this big win.
