Major League Wrestling is back! It’s #TheRestart with MLW Fusion #110. The show opens with the cold open that was released before the episode.
This cold open detailed the revival of Major League Wrestling up until the MLW roster taking back the company from Contra Unit. It was very insurgency style how they just rushed the HQ and Josef Samael was caught unaware.
Also, Rich Bocchini is joined with a new commentary part in Jared St. Laurent. According to TSN, St. Laurent is the great-grandson of the twelfth Canadian Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent. He’s solid at the booth, I’m looking forward to hearing him more.
MLW Fusion has a new ticker that shows the match time. Very nice.
Storylines On This Episode
Major League Wrestling has had seven months of storylines built up through the MLW Pulp Fusion series. You have Contra Unit vs. MLW, the Von Erichs vs. Team Filthy, and tension between Dynasty members Richard Holliday and Alexander Hammerstone.
Also, Brian Pillman Jr has been feuding with Myron Reed and Injustice over the MLW World Middleweight title. Los Parks wanted a real challenge, of course. Holliday is also feuding with MLW interviewer Alicia Atout—yes, still.
Davey Boy Smith Jr was one of the wrestlers leading the charge against Contra Unit. He has Jacob Fatu’s MLW World Heavyweight title in his sights and was announced as the next competitor for the belt.
We can’t forget all of the newcomers to the company who were signed over the past months! In this episode, the Opera Cup 2020 matches and alternates were also announced.
The Von Erichs’ segments have been getting better. You have their pops instilling knowledge of the past and strong coaching and it looks like it’s sinking in with Marshall and Ross.
Low-Tier
MLW National Openweight Champion Alexander Hammerstone blitzes through his challenge in Jason Dugan. I couldn’t tell you anything about him, the match ended in 20 seconds so nothing here.
Hammerstone called out the MLW booking office for not giving him a World Heavyweight title shot. I mean, he has been number one in the PWI rankings forever.
Exotic-Tier
After taking his time coming out, Brian Pillman Jr finally got his match against Myron Reed for the MLW World Middleweight title. Lately, both men have been active at shows with Reed rolling Game Changer Wrestler, AAW, and Synergy Wrestling and Pillman appearing in OVW and AEW.
This was a very even match with Pillman really taking it to Reed and match his pace. It was so competitive that Myron Reed finally removed the chest protector. I don’t know if he should’ve done that.
Reed ends this with the Captain Crunch on Brian Pillman at 11:17. Strong match and St. Laurent’s fight analyst role with the stats and the like were pronounced here.
After his match, Reed said that Lio Rush was in Major League Wrestling and that he wanted him as his next challenge.
The main event MLW World Heavyweight title bout was heated. Davey Boy Smith Jr was weighed pretty high in PWI’s Top 10 with his Opera Cup 2019 win and momentum.
He was only bested by Hammerstone’s dominance of the National Openweight title. The champion, Jacob Fatu, was here to fight as was DBS Jr. This match was one of those monster battles.
It was mid-tempo at a minimum via the mat stuff but when they turned it on it was hard-hitting. Lots of clubbing, headbutts, and kicks. Like the Middleweight title match, they got a lot done in what seemed like a longer match.
I was certain Davey Boy Smith had this and an alternate would take his place in the Opera Cup. However, Fatu retained the belt at 10:22.
MLW Fusion #110 Verdict: Exotic-Tier (8/10)
Major League Wrestling did their return show right featuring 2.25 of the three singles titles. Two of the matches were competitive and again, Jared St. Laurent added to the matches’ commentary since the presentation was more sports competition-like.
As a matter of fact, it reminded me of the direction Ring of Honor is taking now and what Impact on FSN was like initially. The new MLW Fusion also had a different flow. It was faster than it was pre-COVID and this made for a great episode.
Match of the Episode honors goes to the MLW World Heavyweight title match between champion Jacob Fatu and Davey Boy Smith Jr.
