New Japan Pro Wreslting’s (NJPW) Best of the Super Juniors (BOSJ) tournament has become known as the premier junior heavyweight tournament in the world since its current inception in 1994.
The 27th incarnation of the tournament sees CHAOS member “The Sniper of the Skies” Robbie Eagles make his return to a NJPW ring for the first time since the COVID-19 (Coronavirus, 2019) forced delay in March. Eagles trained at the NJPW New Zealand Dojo (Fale Dojo), which led to him breaking in with the promotion in February 2018.
His last match before the shutdown came in title challenge defeat with fellow CHAOS members Tomohiro Ishii and Hirooki Goto against the Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) trio of Evil (now with Bullet Club), Shingo Takagi, and Bushi who were NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champions at the time.
Eagles was solidified as a top challenger to the at the time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Hirmou Takahashi, who Eagles pinned during his return match on December 19, 2019 after a lengthy neck injury. Hiromu would win the title from at the time CHAOS member Will Ospreay during Wrestle Kingdom 14 Night 1, making Eagles a natural challenger.
While time has elapsed, Eagles will have the opportunity to re-establish himself as the top junior heavyweight contender if he can win BOSJ 27. Robbie has wrestled several matches in Pro Wrestling Australia (PWA) while away from NJPW, so he will be the freshest competitor with BOSJ, while not be hampered by complete ring rust.
Eagles nearly became the first Australian born wrestler to become a champion within NJPW when he challenged then IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion Will Ospreay on June 29, 2019 during NJPW Southern Showdown In Melbourne. While he was unsucessful, Eagles put his name on the map after the courageous performance on his home soil.
His tournament campaign begins with Suzuki-Gun member Douki on November 15th and Master Wato on November 18th.
