Despite many delays and nearly counter programming the planned episode of AEW Dark, the first AEW Games would come and go. There was a lot of information involved, but one fact shined above all else. Their upcoming console game might emulate one of the greatest of all time, as they have the director of WWF No Mercy on the development team.
Director Of WWF No Mercy Hideyuki ‘Geta’ Iwashita Was Confirmed By Kenny Omega
After a look at some very early gameplay, showing a match between Kenny Omega & Chris Jericho, before Hikaru Shida took Omega out, Kenny Omega had one last announcement. He would confirm that Hideyuki Iwashita had signed on to help develop the game.
“The event also featured the introduction of wrestling gaming mastermind and the newest AEW GAMES team member, Hideyuki ‘Geta’ Iwashita, best known for his work on the critically-acclaimed No Mercy for fifth-generation consoles.” read the AEW press release on the event.
“When I first signed with AEW, I asked Tony Khan to let me help assemble the best gaming team on the planet, to make the best wrestling games ever. With masterminds like Geta and the incredible team at YUKE’S, we are well on the path to deliver a fresh, vastly superior gaming experience that our fans deserve.” is what Omega said in the release.
The First AEW Console Game Still Shows Promise
The early footage had many people comparing the game to things like WWE All Stars, instead of the more realistic look that games like WWE 2K20 tried to provide. We might get a more arcade styled game from AEW Games to get things started, which isn’t going to please all the fans, but if it plays like WWF No Mercy, it will bring in some older fans.
It won’t be the only AEW game to ever come out, but it’s their chance to make a good first impression. They aren’t taking it lighthly, getting Yukes to develop and Geta on the staff. The AEW lockeroom is full of hardcore gamers, but it was going to take more than that to get a strong product. At the very least, it’s looking more promising than the TNA Impact game from the mid-2000’s.
