Much earlier this year at Wrestle Kingdom, despite there being no formal agreement between AEW & NJPW, they had a presence at the event. AEW Champion Chris Jericho proudly wore the AEW Championship to the ring for his match with ‘The Ace Of The Universe’ Hiroshi Tanahashi on January 5th.
Meanwhile, Jon Moxley was able to wrestle on both nights. On night one, he won the IWGP United States Championship off Lance Archer. The next night, he defended his championship against one half of the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Champions Juice Robinson, with both being very great matches.
However, come January 4th & 5th in 2021, there will likely be no AEW wrestlers on either nights.
Travel Restrictions Would Make AEW Stars Miss Too Much Time In Their Main Promotion
The main issue holding AEW stars back in this case has to do with travel restrictions caused by COVID-19. They would have to make their way to Japan around December 20th, which means they would miss a taping of AEW Dynamite on December 30th.
In theory, this could work, as having Moxley or Jericho do a pre taped promo would work for the January 6th episode of AEW wouldn’t be out of the ordinary, there are too many risks involved.
This especially impacts Jon Moxley, who is a reigning NJPW champion, and KENTA wants his title shot. Fans were hoping to see this much anticipated match at Wrestle Kingdom, but this might not be the case.
When Will KENTA Get His IWGP United States Championship Match?
After winning the New Japan Cup USA by cheating the way along, KENTA has a briefcase getting him a future title shot against Jon Moxley. At this point, he might as well have been given an interim championship, having defended the contract like it was a championship, most recently against Hiroshi Tanahashi. With this match highly unlikely, fans are wondering when this match will happen.
With Moxley being unable to appear on NJPW shows in the United States, despite being the United States Champion, and not being able to actively travel to Japan on a whim, we really don’t have a timeline of when this match could happen. If Kenny Omega beats Jon Moxley for the AEW Championship on December 2nd, it would make it easier to take Moxley off TV for this match to happen, but we will have to wait and see.
