It has been eight years since three unknown superstars arrived onto the scene in WWE, and it’s fair to say that they changed the landscape of the wrestling industry for the better. Not many people at the time could have foreseen what could have come after The Shield debuted during Survivor Series eight years ago, as they helped CM Punk retain his WWE Championship.
A lot has changed since then, with Dean Ambrose now on AEW and expecting his first child. Meanwhile, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns remain two of the biggest stars in WWE, with both of the stars having held the biggest title in the company of numerous occasions. But, which three matches are the ones that stand out more than most?
WWE News: Payback 2014
The final match of The Shield’s first run as a trio came at Payback in 2014, as the trio came up against Evolution. It was the final match of a huge programme between the teams, and one that really put each of the stars in the Shield on the map. The match against Evolution was one of the best that they had as a team, as one of the most hard-hitting, as it was a No Holds Barred elimination bout. The Shield highlighted that they were now the dominant trio in WWE, but that lasted for no longer than 24 hours as Seth Rollins shocked the WWE Universe by turning on his Shield brothers to join forces with Triple H and Randy Orton.
WWE News: Elimination Chamber 2014
The 2014 calendar year was a brilliant one for tag teams. Before feuding with Evolution, The Shield were engaged in an outright war against the Wyatt Family. Bray and his team cost the trio a place in the Elimination Chamber match. It was the rivalry that the whole WWE Universe wanted to see, and it didn’t disappoint at the Elimination Chamber PPV. It was one of the hardest hitting and fast paced matches that we have seen in the WWE, which is in no doubt down to the stars that were involved. The Shield ended up losing the match after they were outnumbered in the final stages when Ambrose was unable to get back to the ring after being beat down by Wyatt.
WWE News: Money In The Bank 2016
Another landmark came at Money in the Bank in 2016. While it wasn’t officially a Shield match, it was a huge night for the trio, as all three superstars held the gold during the show. Roman Reigns went into the main event as Seth Rollins as the WWE Champion, but Rollins beat him in the match. However, Rollins didn’t leave the show as champion, as Dean Ambrose cashed in on his former Shield brother to win the championship. It was a night that solidified all three talents as main eventers and championship contenders.
