On December 2nd, New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) presented Best of the Super Juniors 27 (BOSJ 27) from the Osaka Municipal Central Gymnasium in Osaka, Japan in front of 1,220 fans. COVID-19 (Coronavirus, 2019) safety restrictions were responsible for the reduced crowd size, yet the crowd was present during key parts of the night.
The marquee series match of the event saw former three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, BOSJ 25 (2018) winner, and Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) member “Time Bomb” Hiromu Takahashi take on CHAOS member Sho.
Hiromu came into the match after gaining the fall over CHAOS member “Sniper of the Skies” Robbie Eagles on November 29th, while Sho was able to gain the fall over “Way to the Grand Master” Master Wato on the same night.
Sho needed a victory to cause a log-jam at the top of the BOSJ 27 table, while Hiromu would have taken over first place with a victory. While Hiromu was the favorite, Sho has been on the best singles form of his career during 2020.
The match was highly competitive with both competitors unable to gain the necessary footing to quickly dispose of the opposition. However, Sho was able to get the upset victory at the 24 minutes and 53 seconds mark after using his Shock Arrow Piledriver technique.
The victory moved Sho to (5-2) [10 points] while Hiromu dropped to (5-2) [10 points]. Sho getting the tiebreaker over Hiromu was vital and showed that he is a viable IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship contender.
The loss for Hiromu wasn’t a major blow to his trophy hopes; however, it did remove his safety blanket throughout the rest of the campaign. Due to the competitive nature of the contest and the result, Hiromu will likely want to face Sho during the 2021 calendar year.
