Sting in All Elite Wrestling is still surreal to some fans, but he’s there. He’s appeared numerous times, mainly just cutting promos and setting up potential matches with the likes of TNT Champion Darby Allin, Cody Rhodes, and scaring off Team Taz. 2021 is likely the year he’s going to be in for another match, but it might not be a normal match in the ring. While crazier things have happened, Sting has a specific plan in mind for what he wants to do in AEW.
Sting Wants To Do Cinematic Matches
While on the AEW Unrestricted Podcast with Tony Schiavone & Aubrey Edwards, Sting would mention what he wants to get from joining AEW, and what he hopes to give.
“I didn’t want to disappear with my tail between my legs. Here recently, I didn’t want to just end the way it ended. I was pushing to get a cinema-style match with Taker, and for probably a litany of different reasons it just wasn’t going to happen.
So when Tony Khan called and spoke with me he said, ‘Are you interested in doing cinema-style matches?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I am. I am.’
I’d thought I’d like to come back and do that and not disappear again with the tail in between my legs. I’d love to be able to go out – I don’t have to go out on top – I’m just saying to go out in a positive light.
And then as far as giving, I would like to mentor some of these guys. And be of any kind of help that I possibly can. Even though wrestling has changed, I still get it.”
Knowing What To Expect
Ignoring the fact that Vince McMahon didn’t go through with a cinematic dream match of Sting vs. Undertaker, this shows us what to expect from Sting in AEW. He also doesn’t exactly want to win these matches, he simply wants to end his career on his own terms, not due to an injury. Cinematic matches have become popular this year, with great examples like the Boneyard Match in WWE and Stadium Stampede in AEW coming to mind.
This makes a match with Darby Allin very possible, as Allin’s unique presentation and daredevil nature is perfect for an insane cinematic match. Meanwhile, we could still see Sting lock up with Cody Rhodes in a proper wrestling match in 2021, should Sting pass required medical tests.
