Last night on a special episode of WWE Backstage, we would learn who would be starting the 2021 Men’s Royal Rumble match. There were a lot of guesses going around, with proven Rumble match iron men like AJ Styles, Daniel Bryan and Rey Mysterio expected. Instead, we have two former winners of the match, and two men who had a bitter rivalry last year in WWE. Randy Orton is #1, and Edge is #2.
Replacing Another Big Singles Match Between The Two?
Since Edge returned at the 2020 Royal Rumble, he’s only had two matches. Both of these were epics with Randy Orton. First up was a slightly disappointing Last Man Standing match from Wrestlemania, a match which many agree simply went way too long, but told a fine story.
It was followed up by what WWE advertised as “The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever” at Backlash. With a crowd and less weird editing choices, that would have been an easy five star match for many. It was that match that reminded fans just how good Edge is, but he suffered an injury during.
Now he’s back again, and fans were expecting another huge singles match from them. Instead, they might just have that next epic tonight in the Royal Rumble. They very well might dominate the first half of this match, working together to eliminate anyone who gets in their way.
Will Either Edge Or Randy Orton Win This Match?
It’s not impossible to win from the start of the Royal Rumble match. We’ve seen this happen four times before. First in 1995 with Shawn Michaels, then Vince McMahon in 1998, Chris Benoit in 2004, and Rey Mysterio in 2006.
This gives Edge & Randy Orton a non-zero chance of winning this match. They’ve both won Rumble matches in the past, but entered in the back half. Edge is insanely popular even today, and Orton has been one of the best in WWE for about a year now.
However, Orton is linked with The Fiend, who is likely to prevent his victory. Edge has less in his way, and could make a fine opponent for either the WWE or Universal Champions at Wrestlemania. The only thing stopping him is potential injury along the way. Do you see Randy Orton or Edge winning the 2021 Royal Rumble after starting the match?
