There have been constant rumours since the arrival of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City that the club could be set to make a move for legendary forward Lionel Messi. However, there has been additional fuel added to the fire over the past six months or so, as the Argentinean pushed for a move away from the Catalonian club, before later backtracking after realising that there wasn’t a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave for free.
City had hoped to be the club to profit from the breakdown between Messi and Barcelona in the summer, but the Argentinean revealed that he would stay for one final season to see out his deal.
Soccer News: Premier League Club Remain In Pole Position
At present, it is extremely unlikely to see Messi extending his deal with the La Liga club, as his frustrations have been clear for all to see over recent months. There was more evidence of his aggression behind’s the club current situation as he looked increasingly frustrated throughout Barcelona’s 4-1 Champions League defeat against PSG on Tuesday evening.
Still, new incoming president Joan Laporta has claimed that he and the club will do everything that they can over the remainder of the season to try and persuade the Argentinean to stay at the Nou Camp. However, his chances of achieving that target look unlikely after latest reports have indicated that City have approached the legendary playmaker about joining them at the end of the current season.
Soccer News: City Deny Approach
Messi has just four months left remaining on his current deal, which means that he is free to discuss a future move with club’s outside of Spain. However, City have knocked back reports that they are discussing a deal with Messi, as a spokesman told Sky Sports News that there has never been an offer made for Messi, or talks between the two parties.
The Premier League giants aren’t the only team that have shown an interest in Messi, as the side that beat Barcelona in midweek are also among his suitors. PSG are looking for the final piece of their puzzle to win the Champions League, and a forward line consisting of Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe would certainly be one that would bring fear to every defence in world football. A move to the MLS or a return to his homeland have also been muted, but it is incredibly unlikely that he will turn his back on the European game at this stage of his career.
