There have been some strange stories in the world of sport over the past couple of years, but you would have to go some way to beat the tale of two Hollywood A-Listers taking over an English club that aren’t in the top four tiers of the pyramid.
However, this week it was confirmed that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are the proud new owners of non-league side Wrexham. The story that the two stars would be investing in the club first broke a couple of months ago, but it has been confirmed this week after the Football Association completed their tests.
Soccer News: Plan Set Out By Stars
The Hollywood stars announced that they had reached an agreement with the Wrexham Supporters Trust to take ownership last year, after the move was approved by the supporters of the club. However, it wasn’t until this week that the deal was finalised. It would appear that Reynolds and McElhenney look good for their promise too, as they have already invested £2 million into the club as part of the deal. It is believed that the money will go towards recruitment for the team, as Wrexham look to make it back into the Football League.
The Hollywood stars certainly have big plans for the club, as they have also promised to revamp the team’s home stadium of the Racecourse Stadium, while the women’s team is also a huge part that they will be looking to invest in. As you would imagine from two of the most lighthearted stars there was a flurry of entertainment on social media online. Reynolds changed his name to Wryan on Twitter, while McElhenney changed his named to Wrob. There was also a humorous admission into their mission statement, as they pledged to ‘always beat Chester.’
Soccer News: Who Are Wrexham?
Many North American fans would be drawn to the club by the new owners, and they will be ferociously be looking to learn more about the team. They currently play in the fifth tier of English soccer, and are in seventh place. Wrexham are currently 12 points off the top of the table, but have been in decent form throughout the season to this point.
They have constantly been a club that have shown fighting spirit, and that was evident as they won the 2005 FA Trophy despite being in financial turmoil. The goal for the new owners would be to get them back into the Football League, where they haven’t played since their 87-year stay was ended at the conclusion of the 2007-08 season.
