Last week on Supernova Sessions, Noam Dar once again put his match making abilities on showcase. While having longtime friend Sha Samuels on, he would pitch that he gets to take a shot at the Heritage Cup Championship, held by A-Kid. Samuels helped pave the way for a lot of the young talent in NXT UK, and will get a chance to win his first taste of WWE gold today.
A-Kid has beaten even Trent Seven & Tyler Bate in British Rules Matches, meaning that Samuels will need to bring his A-Game tonight. His last match was a more typical one on one encounter for the NXT UK Championship against WALTER, which A-Kid lost.
A-Kid Finds His Back Against The Wall Early
Round one would start up quick, both men wasting no time with a lockup. Samuels applied a tight headlock, before Kid countered into a hammerlock. Samuels would have a rough time out wrestling A-Kid, being taken down with a single leg takedown, but was able to get back up. Another tight headlock from Samuels would be moved into some resembling a crossface, before he went for a pinfall instead.
Back to their feet, A-Kid would apply a double wrist lock, Samuels getting a rope break to break the hold, before hitting a big scoop slam. A-Kid landed awkwardly on his arm, and Samuels doubled down by throwing him hard into the corner arm first, and looking to apply The Butchers Hook. Kid got a rope break, took a clubbing blow to the back of the head and The Butchers Hook was applied again. With 25 seconds left in round one, A-Kid would submit, giving up the first fall.
Bringing This One Back
Starting round two, A-Kid ran in with a dropkick, but Samuels had done his research and would dodge this high impact strike before nailing some clubbing blows. Kid was slammed shoulder first into the corner again, and even his submission offense was hampered by this, unable to properly lock in a leg lock after getting the single leg takedown. Samuels dumped him to the mat with another scoop slam, but when he went to pick him up, A-Kid grabbed the arm and hit some chops before being dumped once again.
Kid would get a desperate sleeper hold, but Samuels easily got the rope break. A-Kid was persistent and went for it again, before getting another rope break. Samuels fled to the outside, and took a big dive from A-Kid as the second round ended. A-Kid wasn’t able to catch up in falls, but he did some good work in doing damage to Samuels.
Sha Samuels Blows The Lead
Round three would start with both men feeling the damage of this match, a slower start this time. Kid would throw kicks to the knees before looking for the roll ups, getting two consecutive two counts, before Samuels nailed some clubbing blows. Samuels got cocky by stepping on the shoulder of A-Kid, and had his leg snatched for a Dragon Screw. A-Kid followed up with a PK and running dropkick, and was able to even the scoreboard, putting this one at one fall apiece.
The fourth round would start with more strikes. Samuels took two open palm strikes to the jaw, before being dropped with a Northern Lights Suplex. Kid would be hit with a huge lariat in response, but it only got a two count, and came back with a huge enziguri for a near fall. Samuels kicked out right into an armbar, and was able to roll out, only to take another enziguri. Kid dove off the top rope with a crossbody, but was caught into a big scoop slam. Samuels went for The Butchers Hook again, but was saved by the bell.
Round five started with Samuels being taken down into the armbar, and having to try to fight his way free before A-Kid gets the full extension. He was able to get out and now Kid was fighting off the Butchers Hook, but got the shoulder breaker and pele kick, but the running dropkick was turned into a spinebuster. A-Kid countered the Butchers Hook attempt into the Omaplata, and forced the submission to end this one in Round Five.
Much like the Pure Rules matches found in Ring Of Honor these days, the British Rounds Matches of NXT are always excellent. They build up drama in such a simple way, but it’s so effective. A-Kid has proven to be a master of this style, and this match was another great example of that. Sha Samuels looked fantastic here, coming as close as anyone to dethroning A-Kid. Match Rating: 3.75/5 (*** 3/4)
