In 2020, WWE had one new faction that really got fans excited. It was absolutely not the ill fated mess that was Retribution, but rather The Hurt Business. MVP helped boost the stock of Bobby Lashley, Cedric Alexander and Shelton Benjamin, and had fans wondering if they’d become one of the best factions in WWE history, after Lashley won the WWE Championship.
Then WWE had to go and be WWE. Bobby Lashley would remove Cedric Alexander & Shelton Benjamin from the mix, and align with Baron Corbin of all people. While you can argue the core of Hurt Business was always MVP & Lashley, even they were against the plans to remove Benjamin & Alexander, as reports show.
The End Of The Hurt Business Hurt Morale Backstage
As per Fightful Select, the choice to break up this faction came from Vince McMahon himself. This went against the wishes of the members of The Hurt Business, but despite Lashley & MVP going to bat for Benjamin & Alexander backstage, Vince dug his heels in and went ahead with the plans.
First Benjamin & Alexander lost the RAW Tag Team Championships to The New Day with little fanfare, when a triple threat tag team match at Wrestlemania could have happened between Hurt Business, New Day, and AJ Styles & Omos.
Next, Lashley took them out on an episode of RAW and that was that. When even the planned WWE Champion going into Wrestlemania can’t change the mind of Vince McMahon, you know this was a major hit to backstage morale, but especially to the two men affected.
Shelton Benjamin & Cedric Alexander Comment On Twitter
After this split, both Benjamin & Alexander took to Twitter to express their displeasure to the fans. Longtime WWE veteran Benjamin had the following to say: “The events of this past week have been beyond infuriating, frustrating & disappointing but sadly comes as no surprise”. Benjamin came up in WWE alongside men like John Cena, Batista, Randy Orton, and Brock Lesnar, but never got the same chances.
Alexanders thoughts were more depressing in tone, simply saying “It’s 2019 all over again…….”. In 2019, Alexander dropped the Cruiserweight Championship, and moved to Monday Night RAW where he did nothing of note for most of the year, only really finding his footing with The Hurt Business.
As said by Chris Jericho in a recent interview about his leaving WWE, he knew to leave when he was being taken for granted. Could it be time for Alexander & Benjamin to look to leave WWE, after having the rug pulled out from underneath? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
