The first legs of the quarterfinal stage of the Champions League got underway on Tuesday evening. There are two more quarterfinals taking place tonight, which includes a rematch of the 2020 final between PSG and Bayern Munich. Chelsea also meet FC Porto in Portugal in their first leg of the last eight this evening.
However, two huge fixtures took place last night, with Real Madrid and Manchester City both taking huge strides towards the last four of the biggest sports competition in the world.
Soccer News: Real Madrid Dismantle Liverpool
There was a repeat of the 2018 Champions League final on Tuesday evening, as Liverpool travelled to the Spanish capital to take on Real Madrid. There was a sense of déjà vu for the Reds against the all-time leading winners, as the scoreline was the same as it was nearly three years ago. In truth, Liverpool were victims of their own downfall, as they were poor from start to finish. Madrid pounced on every defensive mistake made in the game, and went into the break 2-0 ahead.
The second being scored by Marco Asensio after a poor header by Trent Alexander-Arnold. Liverpool threatened to get back into the game early in the second half when Mohamed Salah fired home. However, just over ten minutes later the game was taken out of their reach, as Vinicius scored his second of the game, which probably should have been saved by Alisson Becker in the Liverpool goal. The Reds remain in the tie, but they will need a huge performance next week at Anfield.
Soccer News: Manchester City Edge Past Dortmund
Pep Guardiola admitted that the pressure put on his side may have been a reason for a below-par performance against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night, but they were still able to get the win. Dortmund looked to have snatched a point with six minutes remaining as Marco Reus fired home. However, Phil Foden scored just five minutes later to give City something to hold on to back in Germany next week.
Kevin De Bruyne had opened the scoring in the first half. Dortmund would have considered themselves unlucky not to go in at the break on level terms after Jude Bellingham was denied a goal on his return to England after being adjudged to have fouled Ederson. Replays showed that the decision was a poor one, as the former Birmingham City star clearly won the ball. However, the game is still poised ahead of the second leg.
