It’s odd that we’re seeing a classic forgien heel storyline be told in 2021, but after Anthony Ogogo insulted america? Cody Rhodes went full patriot. He’s gonna use his fathers nickname of The American Dream as he takes on the former olympic boxer. This is the first real test of Ogogo in an AEW ring, but has previously shown that he can take opponents out with a single punch as needed. Will Rhodes rise to the occasion tonight, or will Ogogo set claim to the first big win of his career?

Cody Rhodes Is The American Dream

Rhodes came out to a hero’s welcome from the AEW fans, reminding everyone why he’s one of their top stars. He’s the grandson of a plumber, son of a common man, The American Dream. Ogogo would look ready to expose Rhodes with a single punch, but Rhodes wanted to wrestle. He’d block a punch into an armbar, and force Ogogo to the ropes.

Ogogo would get his punch, and follow up with an Olympic Slam for the two count. Rhodes nailed a powerslam, but couldn’t follow up. Ogogo came in with hurt ribs, and Rhodes knew this and would target with knee strikes. Rhodes would apply Cattle Mutilation, hurting the arms of the boxer and sending him outside.

Ogogo countered a dive with an elbow strike before getting a German Suplex in the ring. After a jumping elbow drop he’d get a two count, and the pressure started to build up on Rhodes. Ogogo nailed a high impact lariat after hitting the ropes. Rhodes went to the ropes and QT Marshall punched him in the eyes, but Anderson ran him off.

And Anthony Ogogo Didn’t Crush The American Dream

Ogogo set up a spin out fireman’s carry slam for a two count, before sending Rhodes into the middle rope. They’d both take a breather, and Ogogo was bloody above his eye with sight. He’d swing wildly, and take a bulldog. Rhodes targeted the hurt eye with punches and nailed CodyCutter.

Rhodes set up a superplex, but Ogogo punched him down to the mat. Ogogo went top with a frog splash for the two count. Rhodes fought back with a dropkick before locking in the Figure Four Leg Lock, but Ogogo punched Rhodes in the jaw with a jab and got a two count before turning the hold around.

Rhodes hit a headbutt and looked for Cross Rhodes, before a gut punch and uppercut, but Ogogo went for a pin while Rhodes arm was under the ropes. A flapjack cutter in the middle got a two count, before looking for Guv’nors Hammer. Rhodes countered and nailed the Vertebreaker for the win.

So Anthony Ogogo can go in the ring outside of just punches after all. This match was his proper debut and he delivered big time with Rhodes. It saved an awful build, and lost the crowd in the middle Match Rating: 3.5/5 (*** 1/2)

How high can Ogogo rise as he gets more experienced? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
