Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler are set to face off this Saturday; 15th May, 2021 at UFC 262 in what we all would expect to be a very heated battle of five rounds for the UFC lightweight division title. The UFC lightweight throne has been left empty ever since Khabib Nurmagomedov vacated the spot and retired in March 2021, however, the throne won’t be vacant for much longer as it is set to be occupied by the winner of the showdown between Oliveira and Chandler this Saturday night.
Charles Oliveira is a terrific warrior in the ring, he weighs at 155 pounds and stands at 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) tall. He has a very brilliant record in the Octagon; amassing a staggering 30 wins in 39 bouts and a meager 8 losses (4 by knockouts, 3 by submissions and 1 by decision).
UFC 262: Charles Oliveira vs Michael Chandler Battle For Vacant UFC Lightweight Championship
Charles Oliveira specializes in submission maneuvers as they are his preferred weapon for taking down his opponents, he has managed 19 of his 30 victories using submissions, it is safe to call him a maestro in the use of submissions. He comes into this fight as a worthy challenger for the throne of the UFC lightweight division.
Michael Chandler who has also proven over time to be a superb fighter also comes into this fight with a record that speaks for itself. Chandler who also weighs 155 pounds, stands at a shorter 5 ft 8 in (1.73 cm), he has won an astonishing 22 matches out of the 27 he has fought in total. Chandler seems to carry a heavy fist on him as he has won the largest number of his bouts by knockouts, 10 of them. He is also proficient in submission maneuvers, winning 7 fights by submissions and the other 5 were won by unanimous decisions.
Overall, Chandler comes into this fight as an all-rounder who can win a fight by deploying any means, as he doesn’t appear to be handicapped in any. Chandler who has only suffered 5 losses in his career ironically has fallen victim to his own specialty the most in his losses; getting knocked out 3 of the 5 times he has lost a fight. Chandler’s records and battle proficiency also make him a deserving contestant for the lightweight title.
The match may be set to go either way, but when the statistics are considered, the scale tends to tip a little towards Chandler as he has never lost a bout by submission, this is like water to fire for Oliveira who specializes in submission maneuvers and has won several victories using them.
On the other hand, Oliveira in his losses has been most susceptible to knockouts, which is Chandlers favored method of victory; this almost sounds like something straight out of a movie. However, numbers on paper don’t do the fighting in the Octagon, and we can only anticipate what would go down in the ring on Saturday night and hope it will truly be exhilarating and be a battle truly worthy of kings.
