Rumors have been flying that John Cena is returning to the WWE for SummerSlam to face Roman Reigns, but Cena has been playing coy.
On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday 6/23/21, Cena said he is definitely returning to the WWE.
Opportunities and teases
Cena’s busy promoting the F9 release, and he talked about that during his interview, but he touched on wrestling, his return, and the opportunities it’s opened for him.
It makes sense why he hasn’t appeared in the ring or in WWE specifically for a while. He’s been focusing on his acting career and more power to him.
Being a huge wrestling star has opened doors for him and that’s an awesome thing.
The moment we’ve been waiting for happened when Fallon asked him to clear the air about whether or not he’ll return to the WWE.
Cena responded, “Those rumors are true. I’ll definitely be back to the WWE. I just don’t know when.”
Okay, so this isn’t the answer we really wanted, but it’s what we expected.
He’s avoided the question when asked previously, so we doubt he’ll ever nail down an actual time table until he walks out to the ring.
Stirring up interest
Last month, Cena posted a picture of the WWE logo on his Instagram and it stirred up fan enthusiasm and questions about him announcing a comeback or tormenting us.
In the interview, Cena further explained, “I was feeling rather nostalgic about the WWE and I just wanted to post the logo and some people took it as I was returning immediately, which that’s not the case. But I haven’t had my last match and I can’t wait to have my next one.”
While it gives us something to look forward to as fans, the lack of a timetable will drive a few crazy and we think that’s the reason.
Just like him posting the logo was to drum up interest, whether it was to test if fans wanted him to return or simply get people talking about him and the WWE it worked.
Fans want him back and the WWE needs him back badly. In fact, they need their Legends to return more than ever.
Their personas are already set, so it’ll make it easier on a WWE creative team that’s been deservedly under fire for the storylines we’ve had to deal with for a couple of years.
For the moment, John Cena is focused on promoting F9, but that doesn’t mean he won’t make an appearance at SummerSlam of earlier as rumors have suggested.
