Tonight was a send off in AEW. Not to a specific wrestler or personality, but to an era. As of next Wednesday, they are back on the road, hopefully ending their “pandemic era” which mostly took place in Daily’s Place, a venue owned by the Khan Family in Jacksonville, Florida. Following a back and forth main event between MJF & Sammy Guevara, we’d see a video package of the history made in this venue.
From those early batch tapings, to two stadium stampede matches, to the heart wrenching tribute show to Mr. Brodie Lee, there are a lot of memories to leave behind as they get back to the world. All that was left was for Jim Ross & Tony Schiavone to send everyone away and inform them of the show next week.
Jim Ross Called The Show WWE Dynamite
After decades of working for the WWE and telling folks to come back for more action, the term WWE flows naturally off the tongue of Good Ol’ JR. This would come back to bite him in the literal closing moments of the show. After hyping up next weeks event in Miami Florida, Jim Ross would mention “there is nothing in your life that will top seeing a live WWE Dynamite.” After that he’d call off the names of the announcers and say so long everybody.
This obviously caused a huge stir on social media, with fans and detractors of AEW & Jim Ross both calling it an honest human mistake, and others calling for him to finally be taken off the commentary desk. Jim Ross himself was quick to react on Twitter, saying the following. “Yep I apparently made an untimely error tonight at shows end. No excuses. And I’m not quitting.” with the only emoji he seems to know at the end, a smiling face with a cowboy hat at the end.
Is It Time For AEW To Reposition Good Ol’ JR?
Due to his insane tenure in the professional wrestling industry, people are more keen to give someone like JR as a pass, but at the same time these types of mistakes impact how people view AEW as a product. Jim Ross hasn’t been the legendary voice he once was in recent years, and often finds himself lost in the three to four man both in AEW. He’s gone on odd tangents during matches, and previously called Kenny Omega the WWE Champion as well.
While firing him would be a mistake as the man is a living encyclopedia on both professional wrestling history and how to run a company, having worked under countless hats in his career, commentary might not be for him any longer. Where JR has shined the most in recent years is in backstage interview segments, most recently with Andrade El Idolo. Those are when he’s able to both bring his classic voice and personality, while having a safety net of editing and a script to help him along.
Fans generally don’t want Jim Ross off their TV’s. He’s a familiar face to generations of fans. But do you feel he isn’t reliable on commentary any longer? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
