With the debut episode of AEW Rampage being set in Pittsburgh, this main event was a no brainer. Hometown hero Britt Baker will make her second defense of the AEW World Women’s Championship tonight. Her opponent is Red Velvet, who has been able to rapidly climb the ranks of AEW as she gets better and better in the ring. Can she pull off the ultimate upset tonight?
Britt Baker Is Coming In Hurt
Red Velvet might as well have been the biggest heel in the history of wrestling in this match, as this crowd would never get behind her tonight. Britt Baker on the other hand, got a hero’s welcome once again. Baker was nursing a wrist injury coming into this one, suffering a fractured wrist during her recent match against Nyla Rose.
She’d look for Lock Jaw first, before Velvet slipped out and looked for The Last Slice. They’d move to wrist holds, a questionable choice for Britt but she’d come out on top, before Velvet got the two count. Velvet would take Baker down and tease stomping on the hurt wrist, but wouldn’t take the advantage handed to her.
Baker missed a rush into the corner and hit the wrist off the buckle, but the referee stopped too much damage from being done by Velvet. A leg lariat dropped Baker for a two count, but Baker wasn’t going to stay down. She’d hit the midkick and nail a quick curbstomp, but was unable to apply a proper chokehold.
Unbeatable In Brittsburgh
Baker would kick Velvet right into the ropes, and distract the referee while Rebel got some choking in. In the corner, Velvet would be choked with the boot of Baker and the crutch of Rebel. They might be cheered tonight, but they’re still heels at their core. A quick neckbreaker got Velvet back into this, but Baker dodged the big kick and went for a lariat. Velvet blocked with an elbow strike and hit an armbreaker for a two count.
Baker would look for a crucifix pinfall, but moved into Lockjaw. She was unable to apply it with the cast, but Velvet would unintentionally help by pulling it off. Velvet got distracted by Rebel and rolled up, before Rebel was thrown out. Baker walked into a superkick from Velvet, who followed up with a moonsault for a two count.
The Last Shot would follow, Baker calling out to her boyfriend Adam Cole for some moves before nailing a curbstomp for a two count. They’d fight to their feet before Baker was almost locked in the Lockjaw by Baker. Baker would be able to counter, but Velvet smashed down on the hurt hand. Thinking on her feet like a true champion, Baker turned the hold around and did it with her other hand for the win.
A fairly average match helped by a good pace and an insanely hot crowd. The crowd really made this one worth watching, as it was very clear Baker was not 100% yet. Red Velvet had a fine showing, but isn’t at the champion level yet. Match Rating: 3.25/5 (*** 1/4)
The result of this one was never in question, but after the bell Kris Statlander came to the aid of Red Velvet. Baker got some help from Jaime Hayter, making her AEW return for the first time in two years. Statlander was sent aside, and Baker has some new muscle.
